The significance of the Skylab altimeter experiment results and potential applications [PDF]

open access: yes
The Skylab Altimeter Experiment has proven the capability of the altimeter for measurement of sea surface topography. The geometric determination of the geoid/mean sea level from satellite altimetry is a new approach having significant applications in ...

Chemical Geodynamics of Granitoid Magmatism During a Pacific‐Philippine Sea Plate Transition in Southwest Japan

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 27, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Granitoid magmatism along the western Pacific margin records interactions between subduction dynamics and crust–mantle processes; however, the links between plate reorganization and magma‐source evolution remain debated. Here we integrate U–Pb zircon geochronology with Pb–Sr–Nd–Hf isotope systematics to investigate Cretaceous–Paleogene ...

Intensified Meltwater Influx During Heinrich Stadial 1 Recorded in the Gulf of Maine, USA

open access: yesPaleoceanography and Paleoclimatology, Volume 41, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Abrupt, millennial‐scale climate events characterize the most recent deglaciation. However, their nature remains poorly understood. Previous work has shown enhanced glacial melt signals from the European/Scandinavian Ice Sheet and a rapid recession of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) in Eastern Maine during Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS‐1).

Dynamic compensation in the central Pacific Ocean [PDF]

open access: yes
The intermediate-wavelength geoid (lambda similar to 2000 km) and sea-floor topography fields in the central Pacific Ocean were studied in terms of static and dynamic compensation models.

Estimating responses of marine benthic communities to reduced nutrient loading using process‐based and statistical modelling

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 5, May 2026.
Our framework links policy targets (achieving good ecological status) and actions (nutrient emission reductions) to realized biodiversity benefits. The approach also supports the optimal placement of monitoring sites under different nutrient abatement scenarios.

Shape of the ocean surface and implications for the Earth's interior: GEOS-3 results [PDF]

open access: yes
A new set of 1 deg x 1 deg mean free air anomalies was used to construct a gravimetric geoid by Stokes' formula for the Indian Ocean. Utilizing such 1 deg x 1 deg geoid comparisons were made with GEOS-3 radar altimeter estimates of geoid height.

Multi‐Omic Assessment of Microbial Communities and Their Polyketide Biosynthetic Potential Across Abyssal Sediments

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abyssal sediments were assessed for taxonomic diversity and polyketide biosynthetic potential and compared to metagenomic and metabolomic assessments of the same sediments. Biodiversity differences were documented across biogeochemical regimes with the results providing baseline awareness of what might be lost should deep‐sea microbiomes be disrupted ...
