Geologically Current Rates of Hotspot Motion

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract Hotspots, sites of mid‐plate volcanism or of excessive volcanism along a plate boundary, overlie plumes of hot rock that rise in the solid state from Earth's mantle. Previously estimated rates of lateral hotspot motion relative to a hotspot reference frame since Late Cretaceous time range from ∼3 to ∼80 mm/yr.

A First Look at the Snow/Ice Penetration Effect of SWOT Observations on Water Level of Global Glacial Lakes

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission promises quasi‐global monitoring of glacial lakes, yet the elevation difference arising from its Ka‐band radar penetrating lake snow/ice cover remains unquantified. This poses a challenge to assessing their level changes.

Tracking Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus orientalis) in the northeastern Pacific with an automated algorithm that estimates latitude by matching sea-surface-temperature data from satellites with temperature data from tags on fish [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Data recovered from 11 popup satellite archival tags and 3 surgically implanted archival tags were used to analyze the movement patterns of juvenile northern bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus orientalis) in the eastern Pacific. The light sensors on archival

A New Population of the Small European Locust Lobster (Scyllarus arctus) on Artificial Reefs (Central Adriatic Sea)

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 36, Issue 5, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Lobsters, including the Small European locust lobster Scyllarus arctus, are distributed throughout the Mediterranean Sea, inhabiting rocky bottoms, muddy substrates and seagrass meadows. Despite increasing scientific interest, S. arctus remains understudied, and available information on its distribution is largely limited to grey literature ...

Mapping South Baltic Near-Shore Bathymetry Using Sentinel-2 Observations

open access: yesPolish Maritime Research, 2017
One of the most promising new applications of remote observation satellite systems (RO) is the near-shore bathymetry estimation based on spaceborn multispectral imageries.

Reappraising elastic thickness variation at oceanic trenches [PDF]

open access: yes
We reassess the variation of elastic thickness as a function of lithospheric plate age using a global database of bathymetric and free-air gravity profiles which are perpendicular to oceanic trenches.

Improving Satellite-derived Bathymetry

open access: yes, 2016
Bathymetry is traditionally acquired using singlebeam or multibeam echosounders. This method produces accurate depth measurements along transects but is constrained by operating cost and an inability to survey in very shallow waters. Airborne Lidar is able to produce accurate bathymetric information over clear waters at depths up to 70m, but can be ...
