A Survey on Formation Control of Small Satellites

Proceedings of the IEEE, 2018
This paper comprehensively reviews the state-of-the-art development in formation control of small satellites. Satellite formation flying, distributed satellite systems, and fractionated satellite formation are discussed first. Various formation control architectures and methods of small satellites are then introduced, including the leader-following ...

Control of a satellite formation for imaging applications

Proceedings of the 2003 American Control Conference, 2003., 2004
In this paper, we state the basic governing relationships between a constellation's motion in physical two dimensional space and imaging objectives. We then introduce a class of motions that satisfies imaging objectives and seek simple solutions to the problem of motion design and control of a formation for imaging applications.

Formation of multimers of linear satellite RNAs

Virology, 1991
A 22-base region of turnip crinkle virus satellite-RNA C (sat-RNA C) is involved in the accumulation of monomeric and dimeric forms. Deletions within the region inhibited the accumulation of sat-RNA C monomers. However, normal ratios of dimers to monomers occurred if the 22 bases were replaced by 22 unrelated bases or if the location of this region was

Optimal Reconfiguration of Formation Flying Satellites

Proceedings of the 44th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 2006
We employ a recently developed new technique for the numerical treatment of optimal control problems for mechanical systems in order to compute optimal open loop control laws for the reconfiguration of a group of formation flying satellites. The method is based on a direct discretization of a variational formulation of the dynamical constraints.

Robust predictive control of satellite formations

2008 10th International Conference on Control, Automation, Robotics and Vision, 2008
Formation keeping control design for formations in eccentric Earth orbits is considered. The overall control design follows a non-hierarchical control architecture based on virtual structure approach. For the local level control, the linear parameter varying model describing the relative motion of member satellites is approximated by an uncertain model

Satellite formation, II

Icarus, 1978
A satellite formation model is extended to include evolution of planetary ring material and elliptic orbital motion. In this model the formation of the moon begins at a later time in the growth of the earth, and a significant fraction of the lunar material is processed through a circumterrestrial debris cloud where volatiles might have been lost. Thus,

Wireless Communication in LEO Satellite Formations

2008 NASA/ESA Conference on Adaptive Hardware and Systems, 2008
In this paper we investigate key IEEE 802.11 optimization techniques with the aim to adapt the commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS) wireless standard for inter-satellite communication in autonomous distributed spacecraft formations. Optimisation approaches such as the tuning of the IEEE 802.11 physical layer parameters and enhancing the data link layer for ...

Vision Assisted Satellite Formation Control

Proceedings of the 45th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 2006
This paper examines a complete solution to autonomous formation flying of satellites where problems of position, velocity and attitude estimation, data fusion across the cluster, constrained actuators, fuel efficient manoeuvres, actuator misalignment and robustness are all considered.
