Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) is currently the unique technique to determine station coordinates, Earth Orientation Parameters (EOPs) and Stokes coefficients of the Earth’s gravity field from one observation equation with a high accuracy. These parameters form the so-called ‘three pillars’ (Plag and Pearlman, 2009) of the Global Geodetic Observing ...

Satellite Laser Ranging and its Applications
Celestial Mechanics, 1985Satellite laser ranging (SLR) provides an important capability for precise orbit determination and for geophysical parameter estimation to support a number of contemporary geodynamic and oceanographic investigations. The precision of the SLR measurement has improved from the early meter-level systems to the current capabilities of a few centimeters for

Satellite rings in solid state lasers
Applied Optics, 1979The intensity distribution of the nonlocalized rings from a Fabry-Perot standard is calculated. This is illuminated by a point source in order to characterize the interference pattern. The results show that the rings are identical with the nonlocalized rings around the principal (Gaussian) beam from a solid state laser (ruby or neodymium).

Satellite laser ranging using pseudonoise code modulated laser diodes
Annual Meeting Optical Society of America, 1986Satellite laser ranging systems typically use ultrashort, high-energy pulses generated from Q-switched ruby lasers or mode-locked Nd:YAG lasers. The average power transmitted in these systems is of the order of 1 W. The range error is proportional to the laser pulse width and inversely proportional to the square root of the number of received signal ...

Determining the range to a satellite in orbit around the earth utilising the technique of satellite laser ranging (SLR) was pioneered in the early 1960s. The first successful ranging experiment was reported in the 3 December 1964 issue of Flight International (Smith 1964). Dr. Henry H. Coherent inter-satellite and satellite-ground laser links
SPIE Proceedings, 2011Since February 2008 coherent laser communication links are operational in-orbit. Transmitting data at a rate of 5.625 Gbps they verify the capability of laser communication exemplarily in LEO-LEO and Ground-LEO constellations. The LEO-LEO links run with a bit error rate of 10-11. Acquisition typically is closed within seconds.

Frequency stabilization of laser diode light sources in satellite-to-satellite laser interferometers
SPIE Proceedings, 2006The present work discusses methods of stabilizing the frequencies of commercially-available laser diodes. Laser diodes are generally compact and long-lived. The frequency stability, which makes them ideal for onboard laser interferometer light-sources, in applications such as the satellite-to-satellite tracking systems used to verify fluctuations in ...

Inter-satellite laser communication system
2008 International Conference on Computer and Communication Engineering, 2008Laser communication links in space are attractive alternatives to present-day microwave links. This paper firstly makes an overview of an optical inter-satellite communication terminal. This terminal contains several modules such as transmit assembly, receive assembly, diplexers, mirrors assembly, acquisition and tracking sensor optics, etc.
