Satellite Laser Ranging

2010
Determining the range to a satellite in orbit around the earth utilising the technique of satellite laser ranging (SLR) was pioneered in the early 1960s. The first successful ranging experiment was reported in the 3 December 1964 issue of Flight International (Smith 1964). Dr. Henry H. Plotkin of Goddard Space Flight Centre led a NASA team to track the

Laser ICESat-satellite

2010
The ICESat satellite, launched in 2003, is equipped with an altimeter that uses a laser beam to determine its distance from the Earth. Forty short laser pulses per second hit an area of Earth's surface that is 70 metres in diameter. These measurement circles are 170 metres apart.

Laser Satellite Communication Systems

2009
Overview: In this chapter we consider statistical quantities introduced in Chaps. 6-€“9 and adapt them to vertical and slant path propagation links. Most of the analysis presented here is for a slant path connecting a satellite in geostationary orbit and a ground or airborne platform.
