The IPWG Satellite Precipitation Validation Effort

2020
The estimation of precipitation (rainfall and snowfall) across the Earth’s surface is important for both science and user applications, ranging from understanding and improving our knowledge of the global energy and water cycle, to water resources and hydrological modelling, and to societal applications such as water availability and monitoring of ...

Satellite precipitation products and hydrologic applications

Water International, 2014
This study examined the application of satellite precipitation in the modelling of 10 watersheds in diverse locations around the planet (Brazil, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand). Significantly, modelled streamflow based on local rain-gauge data and the production version of TRMM 3B42 yielded acceptable results in most of the examined watersheds.

PRECIPITATION PROBABILITY AND SATELLITE RADIATION DATA

Monthly Weather Review, 1967
Abstract Window radiation is related to precipitation probabilities for different time periods following the satellite pass. Window radiation combined with cloud brightness is better related to precipitation probabilities than window radiation alone.

Satellite-Based Estimates Of Heavy Precipitation

SPIE Proceedings, 1984
The purpose of this paper is to present satellite-GOES based methodologies for analyzing and forecasting (short range) precipitation from convective systems, extratropical cyclones and tropical cyclones. Currently, satellite-derived precipitation estimates and 3-hour precipitation trends for convective systems, extratropical cyclones and tropical ...

False Alarm in Satellite Precipitation Data

2014
Evaluation of satellite precipitation algorithms is essential for future algorithm development. This is why many previous studies are devoted to the validation of satellite-based observations . For instance, Tian et al. (2009) analyzed the error of six high-resolution satellite products versus a gauge-based estimate, and reported regional and seasonal ...

Comprehensive study of satellite precipitation products

2019

Methods for Verifying Satellite Precipitation Estimates

2007
Satellite precipitation estimates are widely used to measure global rainfall on monthly timescales for climate studies (e.g., Huffman et al. 1997). Near realtime satellite precipitation estimates are becoming increasingly available to the wider community.
