The Satisfaction With Life Scale and the emerging construct of life satisfaction
Journal of Positive Psychology, 2008Since its introduction in 1985, the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS; Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985) has been heavily used as a measure of the life satisfaction component of subjective well-being. Scores on the SWLS have been shown to correlate with measures of mental health and to be predictive of future behaviors such as suicide attempts.

Life satisfaction and satisfaction in domains of life: is it a simple relationship?
Journal of Happiness Studies, 2006This paper studies the nature of the relationship between life satisfaction and satisfaction in domains of life. The domains-of-life literature assumes that a person’s overall satisfaction with his or her life depends on his or her satisfaction in many concrete areas of life, which are classified into a few main domains of life.

We analyze the determinants of global life satisfaction in two countries (The Netherlands and the U.S.), by using both self-reports and responses to a battery of vignette questions. We find global life satisfaction of happiness is well-described by four domains: job or daily activities, social contacts and family, health, and income.

The Satisfaction With Life Scale
Journal of Personality Assessment, 1985This article reports the development and validation of a scale to measure global life satisfaction, the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS). Among the various components of subjective well-being, the SWLS is narrowly focused to assess global life satisfaction and does not tap related constructs such as positive affect or loneliness.

On decentralization and life satisfaction
Economics Letters, 2008Abstract We empirically analyze the impact of fiscal and political decentralization on subjective well-being in a cross-section of 60,000 individuals from 66 countries. More spending or revenue decentralization raises well-being while greater local autonomy is beneficial only via government consumption spending.

Sociological Research, 2001For a long time, relatively high levels of satisfaction with life were recorded in the USSR. However, in the second half of the 1980s, and especially in the 1990s, the situation changed considerably. Assessments of everyday life fell substantially and continued to decline, as evidenced by the findings of lifestyle studies [1, pp.

Taking the satisfaction (and the life) out of life satisfaction
Philosophical Explorations, 2011The science of well-being studies an evaluative kind, well-being, which raises natural worries about the ability of empirical research to deliver. This paper argues that well-being research can provide important information about how people are doing without entangling itself very deeply in controversial normative claims.

The Dynamic Process of Life Satisfaction
Journal of Personality, 2006Drawing from the Cognitive Affective Personality System (Mischel & Shoda, 1995, 1998), we argue for a need to examine within-individual variation in life satisfaction. Thus, employing a diary study of 76 fully employed, married adults we examined the magnitude, antecedents, and consequences of intra-individual variation in life satisfaction.
