Multiwave diffraction in saturable absorbers

Journal of the Optical Society of America B, 1995
We present an analytical description of the degenerate multiwave diffraction of an independent probe beam incident at an arbitrary angle upon a population grating created by two resonant and coherent pump beams in a saturable absorbing medium. We have also undertaken experimental verification of some of the features, using a thin-film sample of ...

WAVE INTERACTIONS IN SATURABLE ABSORBERS

Applied Physics Letters, 1967
The interaction between waves in an idealized saturable absorber is discussed. It is shown that the presence of a strong wave will cause the line to appear to be ``hole-burned'' when probed by a second wave, even though the broadening mechanisms are conventionally homogeneous.

Saturable absorber intensity modulator

IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 2003
We propose and demonstrate a reflection-type optical modulator, with surface-normal architecture that exploits saturation of absorption in semiconductor quantum wells pumped optically. The modulation section, composed of quantum wells placed within a Fabry-Perot cavity, is exposed to an intensity-modulated beam generated by an in-plane laser integrated

Modeling absorption in saturable absorbers

Optics Communications, 2001
Abstract Non-linear absorption in boric acid glass films with 10−4 M concentration of fluorescein and rhodamine 6G was measured with beam intensity variation covering six orders of magnitude. The non-linear absorption in these systems has been interpreted in terms of the four-level model of saturable absorbers.

Transient Bimodality in a Bistable Laser with Saturable Absorber

Europhysics Letters (EPL), 1987
In a laser bistable operation the transient response is investigated when a control parameter is step-switched to a value outside the bistability region. A two-peaked probability distribution for the laser intensity at a given delay time is measured under the influence of internal noise or an externally applied noise.

Pulse shaping with saturable absorbers

1974 International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM), 1974
An active pulse shaper which can generate time waveforms which are very different from those produced naturally by laser oscillators has been devised. The system, which is in effect an optical shutter with variable transmission, consists of an array of bleachable dye cells.

Theoretical study of the operation of gated saturable absorbers

Optical and Quantum Electronics, 1993
The operation of gated saturable absorbers is described by the classical space-time-dependent rate equation model considering both ground-state and excited-state absorption and stimulated emission. The effect of different molecular and cavity parameters on the transmitted pulse is shown.

Optical rogue waves in a laser with saturable absorber

2017 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe & European Quantum Electronics Conference (CLEO/Europe-EQEC), 2017
Extreme events and rogue waves (RW) are commonly know as events with very high amplitude whose frequent occurrence is not explainable through the statistics assumed for the set of data under study. Born in oceanography, the concept of extreme events has been extended to many different optical systems in recent years, such as optical fibers [1], laser ...

2R regeneration study in a microcavity with a saturable absorber

Optics Communications, 2004
We theoretically study the dynamical response of a saturable absorber (SA) in a microcavity realizing a non-linear mirror (NLM). We compare the effects of the SA response time on the extinction ratio of a single pulse crossing a single NLM and a two NLM based device. We also study 2R regeneration of a 40 Gbit/s pulses train with a single NLM.

Bifurcation phenomena in a laser with saturable absorber I

Zeitschrift fr Physik B Condensed Matter, 1981
We investigate the bifurcation diagram of a laser with saturable absorber in the low and medium intensity regimes. The linear stability of the stationary solutions corresponding to these regimes is studied. In the low intensity domain, a Hopf bifurcation point is determined from which a time-periodic solution emerges.
