Multi-megawatt, self-seeded Mamyshev oscillator

open access: yes, 2018
We demonstrate a fiber oscillator that achieves 3 MW peak power, is easily started and is environmentally stable. The Mamyshev oscillator delivers 190-nJ pulses that can be compressed externally to 35 fs duration.

In Situ Preparation of Thin-Film Q-Switches Based on Vanadium Dioxide for Pulsed Fiber Lasers

open access: yesPhotonics
In the presented work, erbium fiber lasers operating in the pulsed mode with a nonlinear element containing a vanadium oxide saturable absorber are demonstrated. The structure of the saturable absorber is based on a segment of thinned silica fiber coated

Black Phosphorus Quantum Dots as an Efficient Saturable Absorber for Bound Soliton Operation in an Erbium Doped Fiber Laser

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2016
We have investigated the nonlinear and ultrafast photonics of chemically processed black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) synthesized by the solvothermal treatment approach, with an average lateral size of about 2.48 $\pm$ 0.4 nm.

Mechanochemical Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructured ErB4 and NdB4 Rare‐Earth Tetraborides

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
ErB4 and NdB4 nanostructured powders are produced by mechanochemical synthesis. 5 h mechanical alloying and 4 M HCl acid leaching are used in the production. ErB4 and NdB4 powders exhibit maximum magnetization of 0.4726 emu g−1 accompanied with an antiferromagnetic‐to‐paramagnetic phase transition at about TN = 18 K and 0.132 emu g−1 with a maximum at ...

Challenges during Flash Lamp Annealing of Aerosol‐Deposited Barium Titanate Films

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Aerosol deposition is used to rapidly deposit barium titanate films with thicknesses ranging from 2 to 16 μm at room temperature, eliminating the need for further densification. However, to recover the electromechanical properties, annealing is required, which limits the usage of temperature‐sensitive substrates.

Nonlinear terahertz devices utilizing semiconducting plasmonic metamaterials

open access: yes, 2015
The development of responsive metamaterials has enabled the realization of compact tunable photonic devices capable of manipulating the amplitude, polarization, wave vector, and frequency of light. Integration of semiconductors into the active regions of

Compact Optical Generation of Microwave Signals Using a Monolithic Quantum Dot Passively Mode-Locked Laser

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2009
Microwave signal generation from the saturable absorber of a monolithic quantum dot passively mode-locked laser is presented. We observe a differential efficiency of 33% that measures the optical-to-RF power conversion.

Rheocasting versus Die Casting: An Insight into the Low‐Cycle Fatigue Behavior of AlSi7Mg0.6

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The study compares rheocast lightweight components with high‐pressure die cast materials regarding microstructure and fatigue behavior. Rheocast process offers higher efficiency due to lower casting temperatures. Despite some microstructural differences, both processes show similar strengths (yield strength 125 MPa, tensile strength 240 MPa).

Solution of a statistical mechanics model for pulse formation in lasers

open access: yes, 2003
We present a rigorous statistical-mechanics theory of nonlinear many mode laser systems. An important example is the passively mode-locked laser that promotes pulse operation when a saturable absorber is placed in the cavity.
