Analysis of xyloglucan metabolism mutants highlights the prominent role of xylose cleavage in seed dormancy. [PDF]

open access: yesPlant J
SUMMARY Seed dormancy is an adaptive trait that delays germination until environmental conditions become favorable for seedling survival and growth. Germination has been shown to depend on the mechanical resistance strength of the covering layers (testa and endosperm) that counteracts the growth force of the embryo. Cell wall remodeling is essential in

Patterns of Technical Variation in Chimpanzee Termite Fishing Behavior in Mbam and Djerem National Park, Cameroon. [PDF]

open access: yesAm J Primatol
ABSTRACT Chimpanzees exhibit considerable inter‐ and intra‐community variation in cognitively complex tool use behaviors, often attributed to social, genetic, and environmental factors. Termite fishing is a well‐documented chimpanzee tool‐using behavior that has been the subject of comparative research exploring behavioral variation between chimpanzee ...

Assessment of Vegetation Habitat Types and Characteristics of Potential Nesting Trees for White-Backed Vultures (<i>Gyps africanus</i>) in Kempiana and Manyeleti Nature Reserves, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
The study revealed that Scavenger Vultures (Gyps africanus) prefer to nest in mixed forests with grass rather than in grasslands, bare ground, or built‐up environments. They also choose tall, wide trees. These results confirm that these vultures do not choose their nesting trees at random, but according to specific criteria.

Activity and nocturnal home range size of male common hippopotamus in Kruger National Park, South Africa

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 4, Page 999-1005, December 2023., 2023
Abstract The common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) is a driver of ecological processes in African savannah aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Recent studies have highlighted the ecological impacts of hippos in these systems; however, these lack behavioural data to contextualise their ecological inputs.

Tax and governance in rural areas: The implications of inefficient tax collection

open access: yesJournal of International Development, Volume 35, Issue 7, Page 1892-1912, October 2023., 2023
Abstract While there has been increasing policy attention on broadening tax bases in low‐income countries, taxing citizens in rural areas often leads to neither revenue gains nor stronger accountability outcomes. Through case studies of Sierra Leone and Togo, we demonstrate that revenue collection in rural areas is highly inefficient, leading to little,

Unmanned aerial vehicle outputs and associated field measurements of the herbaceous and tree layers of the Senegalese savannah

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 3, Page 730-735, September 2023., 2023
Abstract Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are widely used to assess the vegetation of an ecosystem. This report presents three data sets from UAVs used on a savannah‐type ecosystem in Senegal. Two data sets contain an orthomosaic and a surface and terrain digital model (UAV outputs), along with associated field measurements on the tree and herbaceous ...

Interscalar maintenance: configuring an Indigenous ‘premium carbon product’ in northern Australia (and beyond)

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Volume 29, Issue 2, Page 306-325, June 2023., 2023
Abstract Mitigating climate change requires us to constrain combustion in a double sense: decreasing both the use of fossil fuels and the flammability of the biosphere. Fire management by Indigenous peoples in Australia's northern savannas has been presented as a solution to offset the former and assist with the latter, leading to the foundation of a ...

An An accurate molecular method to sex elephants using PCR amplification of Amelogenin gene

open access: yesPachyderm, 2020
The use of molecular methods to identify the sex of elephants from non-invasive samples is essential for studies of population dynamics and population genetics.
