Heterogeneous impact of crop diversification on farm net returns and risk exposure: Empirical evidence from Ghana

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Agricultural Economics/Revue canadienne d'agroeconomie, Volume 72, Issue 4, Page 469-487, December 2024.
Abstract Increasing frequency of extreme weather events threatens the livelihoods of low‐income farm households due to the heavy dependence on rain‐fed agriculture coupled with the under‐developed formal markets for risk management products. Thus, crop diversification is one of the widely used ex ante adaptation strategies to hedge against weather risk

Spatial carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus budget of a village territory in the West African savanna : II. Element flows and functioning of a mixed-farming system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004

Anthropogenic linear features exhibit greater mammal activity relative to surrounding game trails in a woody savannah

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 3, September 2024.
Abstract Anthropogenic development throughout African savannahs results in changes to landscapes and wildlife habitat. Linear features (e.g. roads and powerlines) have become more prevalent and can reshape how many mammal species navigate the landscape.

Rocky outcrops form islands of high and unique tree biodiversity within an ocean of grass in Serengeti National Park

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 3, September 2024.
Abstract African savannahs are characterised by a high plant diversity, partly resulting from a high turnover in community compositions across space. However, it is poorly understood what is driving this spatial turnover in plant communities. Here, we investigate to which extent the presence of rocky outcrops (also called kopjes) explains the community

Spatial and temporal variation of malaria entomological parameters at the onset of a hydro-agricultural development in central Côte d'Ivoire [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
A deeper understanding of the ecology and small-scale heterogeneity of malaria transmission is essential for the design of effective prevention, control and elimination interventions.

Trait‐based mechanistic approach highlights global patterns and losses of herbivore biomass functional diversity

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 4, Page 808-819, April 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Mammalian herbivores play a pivotal role in Earth System processes by affecting biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem functioning, potentially leading to significant repercussions on atmosphere–biosphere feedbacks.

Finders' eaters: Increasing bush encroachment may shift carcass detection from diurnal avian to nocturnal mammalian scavengers

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 2, February 2024.
Abstract Bush encroachment is increasingly becoming a problem for biodiversity conservation in African savannas. While this invasion by woody vegetation may hamper avian scavengers such as vultures, which primarily search by sight, it may benefit mammalian scavengers that search by smell.
