Conserving Rodent Pests in Transition Toward Endangered Status

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Rodent control invariably takes place in the context of ecosystems heavily modified by agriculture. Together, they are potent drivers of rodent decline and endangerment. Nineteen percent of 2349 rodent species evaluated in the IUCN Red List of threatened species are of some conservation concern.

Nutrients in an African Savanna: the consequences of supply heterogeneity for plants and animals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In savannas, trees and grasses co-exist and share resources such as water and nutrients. The ratio between the tree and grass components (i.e., vegetation structure) importantly controls productivity, animal assemblages and earth-atmosphere feedbacks.

Aligning Transnational due Diligence: The EU Deforestation Regulation and Brazil's Fragmented Beef Governance

open access: yesGlobal Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Transnational due diligence regulations, such as the European Union Regulation on Deforestation‐Free Products (EUDR), are reshaping sustainability governance by transforming voluntary norms into binding global rules. Yet, their effectiveness depends on how well they align with domestic governance systems and on the power asymmetries that ...

The PhenoChange network protocol for monitoring leaf phenology in tropical dry ecosystems using phenocameras

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Tropical dry ecosystems (TDEs) cover half of the tropics and play a key role in global carbon dynamics. TDEs present distinct canopy and ground layers that often exhibit contrasting phenological patterns. On‐the‐ground observations of phenology by the human eye, though valuable, may suffer from limited temporal resolution and observer biases ...

Synthesizing knowledge about tree diversity, density, and distribution in the savanna woodlands of Sudan

open access: yesTrees, Forests and People
Savanna ecosystems comprise a complex and diverse biome, marked by the balanced cohabitation of trees and shrubs alongside a rich assembly of herbaceous flora, particularly grasses.

Distribution Patterns and Community Assembly of Soil Nematodes Along Elevation Gradients in a Dry-Hot Valley. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
In the Yuanjiang dry‐hot valley, soil moisture is the primary driver of nematode abundance. Soil nutrients play a more important role in determining nematode diversity and community composition. Drought stress does not influence the assembly of soil nematode communities.

Dynamic characteristics of soil respiration of Savanna ecosystem in dry hot valley of Yuanjiang

open access: yes, 2020
[Objective] Soil respiration plays an important role in regulating CO_2 concentration in the atmosphere.Soil respiration in the Savanna ecosystem is one of the main sources of global greenhouse gas emissions, but its emission characteristics and main ...

Potential vs. Realized Large Carnivore Density: The Influence of Livestock on Carnivore Carrying Capacity Estimation

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
In an unfenced mixed‐use savanna landscape in Namibia, we compared realized densities of leopards and cheetahs estimated using spatial capture–recapture models with prey‐based carrying capacity predictions. Leopard densities exceeded predictions based on wild prey alone but closely matched livestock‐supplemented models, suggesting that vulnerable ...

Taxonomic, Phylogenetic and Functional Diversity of Mammals Across a Nationwide Protected Area Network

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Using camera‐trap data from 26 protected across Tanzania, we show that greater landscape heterogeneity and stronger protection are associated with higher mammal species richness and, in turn, functionally and phylogenetically richer mammal assemblages. Greater landscape heterogeneity appears to favour generalist species while stronger protection seems ...

Using phenology to unravel differential soil water use and productivity in a semiarid savanna

open access: yesEcosphere
Savannas are water‐limited ecosystems characterized by two dominant plant types: trees and an understory primarily made up grass. Different phenology and root structures of these plant types complicate how savanna primary productivity responds to changes
