Pine savanna restoration on agricultural landscapes: The path back to native savanna ecosystem services [PDF]
Restoration of savanna ecosystems within their historic range is expected to increase provision of ecosystem services to resident human populations. However, the benefits of restoration depend on the degree to which ecosystems and their services can be restored, the rate of restoration of particular services, and tradeoffs in services between restored ...

Century-Scale Fire Dynamics in a Savanna Ecosystem [PDF]
(1) Background: Frequent fire, climate variability, and human activities collectively influence savanna ecosystems. The relative role of these three factors likely varies on interannual, decadal, and centennial timescales.

EFFECTS OF FIRE AND HERBIVORY ON THE STABILITY OF SAVANNA ECOSYSTEMS [PDF]
Savanna ecosystems are characterized by the co-occurrence of trees and grasses. In this paper, we argue that the balance between trees and grasses is, to a large extent, determined by the indirect interactive effects of herbivory and fire. These effects are based on the positive feedback between fuel load (grass biomass) and fire intensity.

Multiple savanna ecosystem function data in the Brazilian savanna (Cerrado)
This data set includes monthly climate variables, two years of litterfall, leaf and fine wood decomposition rates, soil mesofauna diversity and abundance, and 16 soil biogeochemical variables from a savanna ecosystem (cerrado sensu stricto) in the ...

Applying adaptive management in resource use in South African National Parks: A case study approach
South African National Parks (SANParks) has a history of formal and informal natural resource use that is characterised by polarised views on national conservation interests and benefits to communities. Current efforts aim to determine the sustainability

Differential Responses of Small Mammals to Woody Encroachment in a Semi-Arid Grassland
Encroachment by woody invasive plants is a major threat to grasslands and savannah ecosystems worldwide. Rodents, being primary consumers, are likely to be the first to respond to changes in the structure and composition of native vegetation. We examined

Fire drives abandoned pastures to a savanna-like state in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest
Most tropical forests are threatened by a myriad of human-induced disturbances, associated with land use changes, altered fire regimes and direct deforestation. The combined effect of multiple disturbances can shift forests towards a new, resilient state
