Comparative analysis of land–atmosphere interactions across three contrasting ecosystems in the West Sudanian Savanna [PDF]
Study region: The Sudanian Savanna in northern Ghana and southern Burkina Faso is undergoing extensive land use change due to rapid population growth, altering surface–atmosphere interactions and regional climate dynamics.Study focus: Limited data ...

Functional roles of termites in savanna ecosystems
Bernd Freymann investigated autecological and ecosystem-wide aspects of the functional role of termites (Insecta, Isoptera) in decomposition processes in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, on different spatial and temporal scales. The eusocial termites

EFFECTS OF FIRE AND HERBIVORY ON THE STABILITY OF SAVANNA ECOSYSTEMS [PDF]
Savanna ecosystems are characterized by the co-occurrence of trees and grasses. In this paper, we argue that the balance between trees and grasses is, to a large extent, determined by the indirect interactive effects of herbivory and fire. These effects are based on the positive feedback between fuel load (grass biomass) and fire intensity.

Precipitation as driver of carbon fluxes in 11 African ecosystems [PDF]
This study reports carbon and water fluxes between the land surface and atmosphere in eleven different ecosystems types in Sub-Saharan Africa, as measured using eddy covariance (EC) technology in the first two years of the CarboAfrica network operation ...

Frequent burning promotes invasions of alien plants into a mesic African savanna [PDF]
Fire is both inevitable and necessary for maintaining the structure and functioning of mesic savannas. Without disturbances such as fire and herbivory, tree cover can increase at the expense of grass cover and over time dominate mesic savannas ...

Despite savannas being known for their relatively sparse vegetation coverage compared to other vegetation ecosystems, they harbour functionally diverse vegetation forms. Savannas are affected by climate variability and anthropogenic factors, resulting in

Dynamics of Sudanian savanna-woodland ecosystem in response to disturbances [PDF]
Grazing, fire and selective tree cutting are major disturbances shaping species diversity and productivity in savanna-woodland ecosystems. Their effects, however, are highly variable and poorly understood.
