Aspects of the Stability and Resilience of Savanna Ecosystems
1982Savannas are among the most variable of terrestrial ecosystems. They undergo large and frequent changes in production, composition and structure and they contain some of the worst examples of degradation by man. There are, accordingly, many references to them as “fragile” and “brittle” ecosystems, with frequent predictions of imminent “collapse”.

Ecosystem structure and growth of the African savanna
Global and Planetary Change, 1993Abstract Ecosystems are highly structured, interlocking sets of organismic and environmental interactions. Particular ecosystems reappear in the geological record, structured similarly regardless of their evolutionary history. Ulanowicz has hypothesized that energy throughput and compartmentalization are an important part of the evolutionary growth ...

Mineralogical characterization of soils in the Savanna ecosystem
Research on CropsThe mineralogical composition of soil plays a crucial role in determining soil fertility and agricultural potential. Given the highly weathered and nutrient-poor nature of Savanna soils, understanding their mineralogical composition is essential for developing sustainable land management strategies that enhance nutrient availability, support crop ...

Infestation of African savanna ecosystems by subterranean termites
Ecological Complexity, 2015Abstract This review is an analysis of the dimensions of termite infestation in African savannas. The aim of this work is to draw the attention of ecologists, conservationists, policy makers and farmers to the current and future threats of subterranean termites to the functioning and sustainability of such ecosystem habitats.

TERMITES AS MEDIATORS OF THE WATER ECONOMY OF ARID SAVANNA ECOSYSTEMS
2006Large termite mounds, constructed by colonies of various species of macrotermitine termites (Isoptera, Termitidae, Macrotermitinae), are dominant features of the arid and semiarid savannas of southern Africa. These mounds can populate a savanna in very high densities, generally one to four colonies per hectare, containing biomass of termites and ...

Thornbush invasion in a savanna ecosystem in eastern Botswana
Vegetatio, 1984The paper describes the thornbush invasion (bush encroachment) found in the savanna at Olifants Drift in eastern Botswana. Overgrazing by cattle is responsible for the opening up of the grass sward and has enabled woody species to establish. A quantification of this process between 1950 and 1975 in an area of ca.

Is Succession a Viable Concept in African Savanna Ecosystems?
1981The savannas of Southern and East Africa have five major characteristics that together distinguish them from other ecosystems: 1. Both the herbaceous and woody layers contribute significantly to primary production, and they generally occur in an irregular mosaic. 2. The vegetation is spatially very heterogeneous. 3.
