Effects of wildfire on the distribution of mammals and birds in a working shrub‐steppe landscape

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract The intensity, frequency, and extent of wildfire have increased drastically in the sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) ecoregion within Washington, USA, over the last few decades. Wildfire on this landscape, already modified and fragmented by agriculture and other disturbances, may challenge the persistence of wildlife that depend on continuous ...

Deep Learning Models for Mapping Surficial Geology in Selected Physiographic Regions of New York

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 9, September 2026.
Deep learning models provide a faster, less resource‐intensive approach to mapping surficial materials. Though not a replacement for traditional mapping, the models and framework developed here can enhance the speed, consistency and quality of surficial geologic mapping when trained with high‐quality data, especially in glaciated terrain.

Impacted Bones: Can Extant Primates Help Identify Tool Use in Early Hominins?

open access: yesEvolutionary Anthropology: Issues, News, and Reviews, Volume 35, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Despite recent advances pushing back the earliest record of tool use, how and when it first emerged in hominins, and the extent to which it featured amongst the numerous co‐existing species, remain critical questions in paleoanthropology. In addition to analyzing fossils and lithic toolkits, novel strides in understanding this might be made by

Effects of a Catastrophic Debris‐Flow on a Coastal Salt Marsh

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology Communications, Volume 1, Issue 3, September 2026.
Debris‐flows are extreme events that can occur when wildfire is followed by heavy precipitation. Although debris‐flow effects are primarily assessed in montane systems, here, we document the downstream physical and biological impacts of a debris‐flow in a coastal salt marsh.
