Physiological roles of lignins – tuning cell wall hygroscopy and biomechanics

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 6, Page 2674-2706, December 2025.
Summary Lignins constitute the second most abundant carbon‐storing biopolymers in the biosphere. These phenolic polymers accumulate in different concentrations, compositions, and localisations within and between cell wall layers and cell types. Lignins were acquired during plant terrestrialisation 450 million years ago, and the diversification of their

Trehalose 6‐phosphate – a central regulator at the crossroads of sugar signalling, metabolism, and development

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 5, Page 2243-2250, December 2025.
Summary In mammals, blood sugar levels are tightly controlled by two hormones: insulin and glucagon. In flowering plants, a comparable regulatory mechanism exists, mediated by the sugar‐signalling molecule trehalose 6‐phosphate (Tre6P). Similar to insulin, Tre6P functions as a signal and negative feedback regulator of sucrose, the main transport sugar ...

Physical constraints and environmental factors shape phloem anatomical traits in woody angiosperm species

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 5, Page 2316-2330, December 2025.
Summary Xylem trait studies have enhanced our understanding of how plants strategically adapt their morphological and anatomical features to diverse climates. Despite the importance of the phloem in plant functioning, similar studies of phloem traits are lacking.

Split Fermi seas in one-dimensional Bose fluids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
For the one-dimensional repulsive Bose gas (Lieb-Liniger model), we study a special class of highly-excited states obtained by giving a finite momentum to subgroups of particles.

Toward understanding apoplastic freezing under negative pressure

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 3, Page 1245-1254, November 2025.
Summary The impact of negative liquid pressure on the freezing of xylem sap is a unique scientific problem. Equilibrium thermodynamics would suggest that, due to the density anomaly of ice, sap under tension should freeze at higher temperatures than under positive pressure.
