Valve-Aided Twisted Savonius Rotor

Wind Engineering, 2006
Accessories, such as end plates, deflecting plates, shielding and guide vanes, may increase the power of a Savonius rotor, but make the system structurally complex. In such cases, the rotor can develop a relatively large torque at small rotational speeds and is cheap to build, however it harnesses only a small fraction of the incident wind energy ...

Performance tests on helical Savonius rotors

Renewable Energy, 2009
Conventional Savonius rotors have high coefficient of static torque at certain rotor angles and a negative coefficient of static torque from 135° to 165° and from 315° to 345° in one cycle of 360°. In order to decrease this variation in static torque from 0° to 360°, a helical Savonius rotor with a twist of 90° is proposed.

Design Optimization of Savonius Rotors: An Overview

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2011
Since the Savonius rotor has a low starting torque and is adaptable for wind in various directions, it has received great attention in the past decades. In this paper, we present an overview of the state of the art in Savonius rotor design, according to three general strategies of design optimization: 1) Optimizing Savonius rotor structural parameters ...

Comparative study of a three-bucket Savonius rotor with a combined three-bucket Savonius–three-bladed Darrieus rotor

Renewable Energy, 2008
Abstract The vertical axis wind turbines are simple in construction, self-starting, inexpensive and can accept wind from any direction without orientation. A combined Savonius–Darrieus type vertical axis wind rotor has got many advantages over individual Savonius or individual Darrieus wind rotor, such as better efficiency than Savonius rotor and ...

Wind tunnel tests on a savonius rotor

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 1978
Abstract Tests have been made in a wind tunnel on a number of Savonius rotor configurations in wind speeds of 6–9 m/s. The variables tested were blade aspect ratio, blade overlap and gap and the effects of adding end extensions, end plates and shielding.

Flowfield around a partially-blocked Savonius rotor

Applied Energy, 1991
Abstract One way of power augmentation in the case of Savonius rotors is through preventing the upstream flow from reaching the upwind bucket. To gain more insight and a deeper understanding of this mechanism, a discrete vortex method was applied to the behaviour of a Savonius rotor with one bucket shielded.

Savonius Rotor for Offshore Wind Energy Conversion

Offshore Technology Conference, 2011
Abstract Analysis of performance is presented for wind energy conversion by a Savonius type vertical axis rotor configured for generation of electrical power. The technical approach capitalizes on the high torque property of a large Savonius rotor at rotation rates dictated by the ratio of the wind speed to the ...

Model Testing of Single- and Three-Stage Modified Savonius Rotors and Viability Study of Modified Savonius Pump Rotor Systems

International Journal of Green Energy, 2009
The suitability of modified Savonius wind rotors for water-pumping application is studied with a mathematical model developed for estimating the discharge over a period of time. Single- and three-stage modified Savonius rotors, which are extensively tested in an open jet wind tunnel, are chosen.

Evaluation of a Geometric Modification in Savonius Rotor Using CFD Evaluación de Modificación Geométrica en Rotor Savonius Usando CFD

2018 IEEE ANDESCON, 2018
In Colombia, there are areas not connected to the national electricity grid because of different socioeconomic factors, establishing territories under conditions of vulnerability. In this sense, any initiative aiming to solve this growing situation is imperative.

Savonius rotor as a part of complex systems

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2019
Abstract Savonius rotor is considered as an element of mechanical or electromechanical systems. An empirical approach is proposed for describing the aerodynamic torque basing on available data from physical and computational experiments. A stand-alone wind power generator based on the Savonius rotor is examined where the electromechanical interaction
