SAWing on symmetry

Proceedings of the 1999 Congress on Evolutionary Computation-CEC99 (Cat. No. 99TH8406), 2003
In this paper we investigate the behavior of mutation-based evolutionary algorithms on highly symmetric binary constraint satisfaction problems. With empirical methods we study why and when these algorithms perform better under the stepwise adaptive weighting of penalties (SAWing) than under the standard penalty function.

ZnO on diamond: SAWs and pseudo-SAWs

1995 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Proceedings. An International Symposium, 2002
The development of low-loss UHF SAW filters has led to devices using the higher phase velocities of pseudo-surface-acoustic-waves and shear-horizontally polarized waves. Another way of obtaining higher velocities is to use higher-velocity materials. Diamond, for example, has a SAW velocity near 11 km/s and a longitudinal velocity close to 18 km/s.

Precision Sawing with Wire Saw

CIRP Annals, 1983
Summary This paper deals with the development of new sawing method using wire and lapping compound. First, the mechanism of undulation generation in the sawed surfaces was analyzed, paying attention to changes in the distribution of sawing pressure applied on the wire and assuming the sawing process to be subject to Markov chains.

Suicide by Band Saw

The American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology, 1989
Suicidal injuries caused by power tools have rarely been reported in the literature. The case of a 37-year-old white male schizophrenic patient who sustained a fatal self-inflicted neck injury from a band saw, while engaging in occupational therapy, is presented. Unusual features of this type of injury as noted at postmortem examination were the extent

SAW

2011
Like all game changers within the horror genre, SAW was an independent success, a low-budget champion that flourished without the patronage of a big studio. Not bad for the most successful horror franchise ever, which has spawned subsidiary media and masses of merchandise, including a theme park rollercoaster ride.
