A complete description of the magnetic ground state in spinel vanadates

open access: yes, 2019
Capturing the non-collinear magnetic ground state of the spinel vanadates AV$_2$O$_4$ (A= Mn, Fe and Co) remains an outstanding challenge for state-of-the-art ab-initio methods.

Islamic universalism: Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya's Salafī deliberations on the duration of Hell-Fire [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Classical Sunni eschatology maintains that all those who believe that God is one will enter the Garden of Paradise in due time. Some monotheists may first have to endure punishment and purification in the Fire for their sins, but those with even the ...

Early‐life demographic processes do not drive adult sex ratio biases and mating systems in sympatric coucal species

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 8, Page 1779-1795, August 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Sex differences in early‐life survival can drive skewed adult sex ratios (ASR), which play an important role in mating tactics and parental sex roles. Among birds, cuckoos exhibit the largest diversity in mating systems and thus represent an interesting system to study ...

Ecrobia grimmi in brackish Lake Sawa, Iraq: indirect evidence for long-distance dispersal of hydrobiid gastropods (Caenogastropoda: Rissooidea) by birds [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Molluscan Studies, 2009
Mudsnail species of the genera Hydrobia and Ecrobia ( junior synonym Ventrosia) belong to morphostatic or nonadaptive radiations. Although these genera are anatomically well defined, their species can only be confidently identified using molecular data. During the last decade, the status, distribution and evolutionary history of these coastal, brackish

Eclipse Ice Core Accumulation and Stable Isotope Variability as an Indicator of North Pacific Climate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The high accumulation rate and negligible amount of melt at Eclipse Icefield (3017 m) in the Saint Elias Range of Yukon, Canada, allows for the preservation of a high-resolution isotopic and glaciochemical records valuable for reconstruction of climatic ...

Quantum Magnetic Properties in Perovskite with Anderson Localized Artificial Spin-1/2 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Quantum magnetic properties in a geometrically frustrated lattice of spin-1/2 magnet, such as quantum spin liquid or solid and the associated spin fractionalization, are considered key in developing a new phase of matter. The feasibility of observing the

Macrophage‐1 antigen exacerbates histone‐induced acute lung injury and promotes neutrophil extracellular trap formation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 14, Issue 4, Page 574-583, April 2024.
Macrophage‐1 antigen (Mac‐1) deficiency ameliorated histone‐induced acute lung injury (ALI) and myeloperoxidase elevation in plasma, and decreased the formation of neutrophil extracellular trap (NET)‐like chromatin fibers in the presence of activated platelets.

Anthropogenic Transformation and the Possibility of Renaturalising Small Rivers and their Valleys in Cities – Łódź and Lviv Examples [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Rivers used to serve important functions in the development of cities, and river valleys are a part of the urban space. Regardless of several centuries of anthropogenic influences large rivers and their valleys have remained the dominant elements of the ...

Disentangling late quaternary fluvial and climatic drivers of palaeohydrological change in the Najaf Sea basin, Western Iraq

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 49, Issue 4, Page 1451-1467, 30 March 2024.
This first geochronological study of the Najaf Basin shows that the basin likely formed shortly before 26 ka BP, with significant fluvial activity in the Wadi al Milh c. 26–18 ka BP. There is no evidence for raised water levels during the early Holocene humid period.
