Improving the efficiency of an air conditioning system using a fire water tank as thermal accumulator [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This paper studies the substitution of air condensation by water condensation in the chiller of a university building. This building has a surface of about 30,000m2, is located in a city of the Spanish north coast, and refrigeration is needed for six ...

Critical care unit bed availability and postoperative outcomes: a multinational cohort study

open access: yesAnaesthesia, Volume 79, Issue 11, Page 1165-1179, November 2024.
Summary Background Critical care beds are a limited resource, yet research indicates that recommendations for postoperative critical care admission based on patient‐level risk stratification are not followed. It is unclear how prioritisation decisions are made in real‐world settings and the effect of this prioritisation on outcomes.

Implementation of the Fuzzy Logic Controlled 31‐Level Diode Switched Multilevel Inverter with Optimal Components for Solar PV‐Fed System

open access: yesInternational Transactions on Electrical Energy Systems, Volume 2024, Issue 1, 2024.
This work presents a novel architecture for the 31‐level asymmetrical DC voltage source configured diode switched multilevel inverter, which has a single phase and fewer components. Using asymmetric DC sources and an H‐bridge, the proposed topology generates a maximum output voltage of 31 levels.

A hybrid approach for paraphrase identification based on knowledge-enriched semantic heuristics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach for sentence paraphrase identification. The proposal addresses the problem of evaluating sentence-to-sentence semantic similarity when the sentences contain a set of named-entities.

Progressive Transient Photon Beams [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
In this work, we introduce a novel algorithm for transient rendering in participating media. Our method is consistent, robust and is able to generate animations of time-resolved light transport featuring complex caustic light paths in media.

The future for diagnostic tests of acute kidney injury in critical care: evidence synthesis, care pathway analysis and research prioritisation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is highly prevalent in hospital inpatient populations, leading to significant mortality and morbidity, reduced quality of life and high short- and long-term health-care costs for the NHS.

Staying on message: ensuring fidelity in pre-mRNA splicing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The faithful expression of genes requires that cellular machinery select substrates with high specificity at each step in gene expression. High specificity is particularly important at the stage of nuclear pre-mRNA splicing, during which the spliceosome ...
