Scaling Back on Scales with a Scale of Scales [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Neuroradiology, 2010
An ever-increasing number of articles are published introducing clinical scales to describe neurovascular diseases. Unfortunately, unless you are some kind of idiot savant, there are now too many scales to remember.

Scaling without scaling [PDF]

open access: yesEurophysics News, 2018
Microelectronics is as pervasive as it is invisible. It is however impacting every moment and aspect of our daily lives and has radically transformed all industries. Yet, this adventure began only about 60 years ago, with the first integrated circuits by J. Kilby and R. Noyce.

Scale invariance without scale selection [PDF]

open access: yes2008 IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, 2008
In this work we construct scale invariant descriptors (SIDs) without requiring the estimation of image scale; we thereby avoid scale selection which is often unreliable. Our starting point is a combination of log-polar sampling and spatially-varying smoothing that converts image scalings and rotations into translations.

Connecting entropy scaling and density scaling

open access: yesThe Journal of Chemical Physics, 2022
It is shown that the residual entropy (entropy minus that of the ideal gas at the same temperature and density) is mostly synonymous with the independent variable of density scaling, identifying a direct link between these two approaches. The residual entropy and the effective hardness of interaction (itself a derivative at constant residual entropy ...

Detection of subclonal L1 transductions in colorectal cancer by long-distance inverse-PCR and Nanopore sequencing

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Long interspersed nuclear elements-1 (L1s) are a large family of retrotransposons. Retrotransposons are repetitive sequences that are capable of autonomous mobility via a copy-and-paste mechanism.

Scale-Adaptive Neural Dense Features: Learning via Hierarchical Context Aggregation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
How do computers and intelligent agents view the world around them? Feature extraction and representation constitutes one the basic building blocks towards answering this question.

Fulfilling our educative mission: A response to edTPA critique

open access: yesEducation Policy Analysis Archives, 2018
Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning, and Equity (SCALE) provides a commentary on the manuscripts in this special issue, responding to criticisms of edTPA as an assessment that narrows the curriculum, heavily relies on students’ academic writing ...

The large-scale properties of simulated cosmological magnetic fields [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We perform uniformly sampled large-scale cosmological simulations including magnetic fields with the moving mesh code AREPO. We run two sets of MHD simulations: one including adiabatic gas physics only; the other featuring the fiducial feedback model of ...

Observation of acoustic Dirac-like cone and double zero refractive index

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Impedance mismatch between acoustic metamaterials and a surrounding medium hinders efficient applications, especially for zero-index materials. Here, Duboiset al.

Large-scale structure formation for power spectra with broken scale invariance [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
We have simulated the formation of large-scale structure arising from COBE-normalized spectra computed by convolving a primordial double-inflation perturbation spectrum with the CDM transfer function.
