Efficient pattern matching with scaling

Journal of Algorithms, 1992
Summary: The problem of pattern matching with scaling is defined. The input for the two-dimensional version of the problem consists of an \(n\times n\) ``text'' matrix and an \(m\times m\) ``pattern'' matrix. We want to find all occurrences of the pattern in the text, scaled to all natural multiples.

Scale efficient organizations

[Proceedings] 1992 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, 2003
The authors suggest that scale efficiency in an organization is the result of four constituents: autonomous agents, parallel activity, asynchronous communications, and certain consensus-producing mechanisms. The first three of these constituents are reasonably easy to obtain using existing computer technologies.

High efficiency at web scale

Proceedings of the 9th international conference on Autonomic computing, 2012
Every day, over half a billion people log in to Facebook to communicate with their contacts. They exchange more than 300 million photos and more than 3 billion likes and comments each day. And almost every day, Facebook releases new code with new features and products to all these users.

Efficient scaling for complex division

ACM Transactions on Mathematical Software, 2004
We develop a simple method for scaling to avoid overflow and harmful underflow in complex division. The method guarantees that no overflow will occur unless at least one component of the quotient must overflow, otherwise the normwise error in the computed result is at most a few units in the last place. Moreover, the scaling requires only four floating

Scale Efficiency and Productivity Change

Journal of Productivity Analysis, 2001
Thefirst objective of this paper is to develop a generic measureof scale efficiency for a multiple-input multiple-output firm, using basic principles of modern production theory. The secondobjective is to combine measures of technological change, technicalefficiency change, and scale efficiency change into an encompassing(primal) measure of productivity

Scale Elasticity versus Scale Efficiency in Banking

Southern Economic Journal, 1995
In the early bank cost literature many of the studies found scale elasticities significantly different from unity. As a result, the authors suggested that changes in industry structure could produce cost savings through increased efficiency. Recent bank cost studies improved upon previous methodologies by utilizing flexible functional forms, accounting

Effective and Efficient Learning at Scale

2020
How to enable efficient and effective machine learning at scale has been a longstanding problem in modern artificial intelligence, which also motivates this thesis research. In particular, we aim at solving the following problems:1. How to efficiently train a machine learning model?2. How to speed up inference after the model is trained?3.
