On Scale Mixtures of Normal Distributions

Biometrika, 1987
The exponential power family of distributions of \textit{G. E. P. Box} and \textit{G. C. Tiao} [Bayesian inference in statistical analysis. (1973; Zbl 0271.62044)] is shown to be a subset of the class of scale mixtures of normals. The corresponding mixing distributions are explicitly obtained, identifying a close relationship between the exponential ...

Scale Mixtures of Skew-Normal Distributions

2018
Andrews and Mallows (J R Stat Soc 36:99–102, 1974) discussed a class of robust distributions as scale mixtures of normal (SMN) distributions, which contains a group of thick-tailed distributions. Their work was extended by Branco and Dey (J Multivariate Anal 79:99–113, 2001), introducing the class of scale mixtures of skew-normal (SMSN) distributions ...

Characterizing and Approximating Infinite Scale Mixtures of Normals

Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods, 2006
The purpose of this study is to approximate and identify infinite scale mixtures of normals, SMN. A new method for approximating any infinite SMN with a known mixing measure by a finite SMN is presented. In the new method, the modulus of continuity of the normal family as a function of the scale is used to discretize the mixing measure.
