Scale and scaling in soils

Geoderma, 2017
Scale is recognized as a central concept in the description of the hierarchical organization of our world. Pressing environmental and societal problems require an understanding of how processes operate at different scales, and how they can be linked across scales.

On Measurement, Scale, and Scaling

Water Resources Research, 1986
The relationships between measurement, scale, and scaling are discussed and analyzed in detail. It is pointed out that only certain fundamental properties can be measured and that these properties do not include constitutive variables. The interrelationships between scale and measurement are shown to manifest themselves in two types of heterogeneity ...

SCAling

Proceedings of the 28th Annual ACM Symposium on Applied Computing, 2013
This paper presents an implementation -driven by Service Level Agreement (SLA)- of Cloud auto-scaling based on demand. Simulation experiments indicate that our model successfully keeps the best trade-off between SaaS provider profit and customer satisfaction without requiring manual calibration such as in Amazon Auto-Scaling.

Scales and Scaling

2017
In social sciences the term“scaling” encompasses specific processes tomeasure properties such as sentiment, opinions, attitudes, and so on. “To scale” can mean very different things: by scaling techniques such as Likert scales or Guttman scales the researcher can rank people along a specific dimension; other techniques, if the requirements for their ...

CONCEPTS OF SCALE AND SCALING

2006
The relationship between pattern and process is of great interest in all natural and social sciences, and scale is an integral part of this relationship. It is now well documented that biophysical and socioeconomic patterns and processes operate on a wide range of spatial and temporal scales.
