Rural to Urban Population Density Scaling of Crime and Property Transactions in English and Welsh Parliamentary Constituencies [PDF]
Urban population scaling of resource use, creativity metrics, and human behaviors has been widely studied. These studies have not looked in detail at the full range of human environments which represent a continuum from the most rural to heavily urban ...

Limb bone scaling in hopping macropods and quadrupedal artiodactyls [PDF]
Bone adaptation is modulated by the timing, direction, rate and magnitude of mechanical loads. To investigate whether frequent slow, or infrequent fast, gaits could dominate bone adaptation to load, we compared scaling of the limb bones from two ...

The Body Scaling Effect and Its Impact on Physics Plausibility
In this study we investigated the effect of body ownership illusion-based body scaling on physics plausibility in Virtual Reality (VR). Our interest was in examining whether body ownership illusion-based body scaling could affect the plausibility of ...

This chapter rethinks scales as an opportunity for sustainability studies to engage with decolonial strategies that stand against the confinement of Southern studies as local knowledge, compared to the Western knowledge that is seen as universal. Examples of plurinational ‘scale-jumping’ in Ecuador and kinship networks in Northeast Madagascar redefine ...

Transform Ranking: a New Method of Fitness Scaling in Genetic Algorithms [PDF]
The first systematic evaluation of the effects of six existing forms of fitness scaling in genetic algorithms is presented alongside a new method called transform ranking.

Generic Dynamic Scaling in Kinetic Roughening [PDF]
We study the dynamic scaling hypothesis in invariant surface growth. We show that the existence of power-law scaling of the correlation functions (scale invariance) does not determine a unique dynamic scaling form of the correlation functions, which leads to the different anomalous forms of scaling recently observed in growth models.

Scaling and scale breaking in polyelectrolytes
We consider the thermodynamics of a uniformly charged polyelectrolyte with harmonic bonds. For such a system there is at high temperatures an approximate scaling of global properties like the end-to-end distance and the interaction energy with the chain length divided by the temperature.

Male secondary sexu al characters in Aphnaeinae wings (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) [PDF]
Male secondary sexual characters have been discovered on the hindwing verso of genera Aphnaeus Hübner, [1819], Cigaritis Donzel, 1847, Lipaphnaeus Aurivillius, 1916 and Pseudaletis Druce, 1888 representing the Palaeotropical subfamily Aphnaeinae ...

Reconsidering Scale and Scaling in CSCW Research [PDF]
This one-day workshop invites discussion on the various socio-technical processes and dynamics that characterize scale and scaling in local, community-sited initiatives. Seeking to move beyond a view of scale as mere growth in numbers and a matter of technology-mediated replication, the workshop aims at developing a nuanced vocabulary to talk about ...
