Improved Dust Microphysical Retrieval From LiDAR by Introducing a Priori Constraints From In Situ and Laboratory Measurements

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 7, 16 April 2026.
Abstract The accuracy of height‐resolved dust microphysical retrieval from LiDARs has been greatly improved by the recently developed BOREAL (Basic algOrithm for REtrieval of Aerosol with LiDAR) algorithm which describes non‐spherical dust particles with the Irregular‐Hexahedral (IH) model and inverts 3β (backscattering at 355, 532, and 1,064 nm) + 2α (

Context‐aware UAV LiDAR reveals forest structure and improves tree diameter estimates in subalpine forest

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 7, Issue 2, April–June 2026.
In this study we show how, in natural forests, tree heights adapt across environmental gradients as a response to environmental and biotic factors. Awareness of such local adaptations can be encoded into predictive features and leveraged by shallow learning methods to enhance predictions of tree diameter and tree‐level aboveground biomass.

Perovskite‐based time‐domain signal‐balancing LiDAR sensor with centimeter depth resolution

open access: yesInfoMat, Volume 8, Issue 4, April 2026.
In this study, we present a monolithic high‐speed perovskite‐based photodetector capable of directly sensing the time delay between two light pulses with a temporal resolution of at least 170 ps. This outstanding time resolution is achieved through a signal‐balancing detection scheme that effectively overcomes the limitations of conventional ...

Imputing Missing Long‐Term Spatiotemporal Multivariate Atmospheric Data With CNN‐Transformer Machine Learning

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation, Volume 3, Issue 2, April 2026.
Abstract Continuous physical domains are important for scientific investigations of dynamical processes in the atmosphere. However, missing data—arising from operational constraints and adverse environmental conditions—pose significant challenges to accurate analysis and modeling.

As above, so below: A perspective into the application of land‐forest monitoring methods for the assessment of marine animal forests

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 17, Issue 4, Page 1124-1142, April 2026.
Abstract Marine animal forests (MAFs) are benthic ecosystems dominated by vertically structuring filter‐ and suspension‐feeders. As terrestrial forests, they are considered biodiversity hotspots, forming canopies, serving as a refuge, nursery, reproduction and feeding shelters for many species.
