Noise Resistant Voxel scanning LiDAR
We demonstrate an upconversion imaging technique that transduces near infrared signals to visible for photon counting with low loss and high efficiency. By using far-detuned, 10-ns pump pulses for upconversion, fast voxel scanning is achieved with sub-centimeter ranging resolution over a designated spatial interval of 1.5~meters that is defined and ...Jeevanandha Ramanathan +3 more

Compact high-speed scanning lidar system
SPIE Proceedings, 2012The compact High Speed Scanning Lidar (HSSL) was designed to meet the requirements for a rover GN&C sensor. The eye-safe HSSL's fast scanning speed, low volume and low power, make it the ideal choice for a variety of real-time and non-real-time applications including: 3D Mapping; Vehicle guidance and Navigation; Obstacle Detection; Orbiter ...

Scanning lidar with a coupled radar safety system
Applied Optics, 1999A small scanning three-wavelength lidar system at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, has been used since 1992 to make atmospheric measurements on stratospheric and upper tropospheric aerosols and on the evolution of aircraft exhaust plumes.

Vorticity from Line-of-Sight Lidar Velocity Scans
Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, 2009Abstract A method is presented to compute the spanwise vorticity in polar coordinates from 2D vertical cross sections of high-resolution line-of-sight Doppler wind lidar observations. The method uses the continuity equation to derive the velocity component perpendicular to the observed line-of-sight velocity, which then yields the ...

Scanning iron temperature lidar for mesopause temperature observation
Applied Optics, 2004We introduce a new method for temperature profile measurements in the mesopause region in the altitude range from 80 to 105 km. A frequency-doubled narrowband alexandrite laser is used to scan the iron resonance line at 386 nm. The isotopic shifts of the iron isotopes and the laser bandwidth are derived by the measurement itself.

Analyzing LiDAR scan skewing and its impact on scan matching
2016 International Conference on Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation (IPIN), 2016This paper presents a systematic study of the scan skewing problem. Scan skewing is the non-rigid deformation of point clouds acquired by LiDAR's and is the result of their sequential scanning nature. We theoretically analyze the impact of skewing on scan matching and subsequently quantify the impact using synthetic LiDAR data with controlled skew ...

Postdetection pulse integration efficiency of a scanning lidar
Applied Optics, 1988Probability of detection and postdetection integration efficiency are formulated and calculated for pulses that are partially correlated. For high probabilities of detection, substantial gain may be obtained for a coherent lidar system applied to diffuse target returns when a small number of pulses are integrated.
