Vascularized Bone Graft for Scaphoid Nonunions

Scaphoid fracture nonunion remains a challenging problem that may persist despite traditional methods of bone grafting and internal fixation. The alteration of wrist mechanics created by nonunion as well as the development of avascular necrosis leads to degenerative change of the radiocarpal joint accompanied by loss of motion and pain.

The scaphoid bone accounts for approximately 70% of all carpal bone fractures. The other 30% of these fractures are divided among the remaining seven carpal bones. Knowledge of these relatively rare carpus fractures is imperative to make correct diagnoses, address concomitant injuries, and develop appropriate treatment plans.

Rapid prototyping of scaphoid and lunate bones

Carpal prostheses were fabricated with an Envisiontec Perfactory® SXGA stereolithography system using Envisiontec eShell 200 photocurable polymer.

Dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica of the scaphoid bone

We report a rare case of dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica (DEH) in the wrist of a 7-year-old boy. Clinical, radiological and histopathological manifestations are discussed. The correct diagnosis of DEH, however, was made by the confrontation of the radiological and pathological data.

Cylinder-Shaped Bone Graft for Scaphoid Nonunion

Background: Wedge-shaped bone grafts that are internally fixed by a Herbert-type screw are a well-established surgical treatment for scaphoid nonunion. A procedure using cylinder-shaped bone grafts was also reported, but preoperative wrist functions were not assessed.
