Vascularized Bone Grafts for Scaphoid Nonunions

The Journal of Hand Surgery, 2012
Scaphoid fractures that fail to unite are at risk of developing avascular necrosis and progressive structural collapse, thereby complicating attempts at revision surgical treatment. Vascularized bone grafts have demonstrated utility in promoting consolidation in the treatment of scaphoid nonunions complicated by avascular necrosis.

Osteoid Osteoma in the Scaphoid Bone

Scandinavian Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1982
A case of osteoid osteoma in the scaphoid bone as a cause of persisting pain in the wrist is described. The first operation failed to relieve the symptoms, while a second “en-bloc” excision was successful. Postoperative X-ray examination must be performed in order to ensure radical excision.

Simultaneous Dislocation of the Scaphoid and Hamate Bones

Journal of Hand Surgery, 1998
We report a rare case of simultaneous dislocations of the hamate and scaphoid in an 18-year-old boy. Despite the extensive damage to the wrist joint, the functional results of open reduction and suture of intercarpal ligaments have been satisfactory, without carpal instability and degenerative osteoarthritis.

Vascularized Bone Graft for Scaphoid Nonunion

Techniques in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery, 2003
The management of recalcitrant nonunion of the scaphoid can be frustrating. Recent understanding of the vascular anatomy of the distal radius has helped in the management of these problems. Vascularized bone grafting for scaphoid nonunion has improved the union rates.

SCAPHOID BONE BRUISING – PROBABLY NOT THE PRECURSOR OF ASYMPTOMATIC NON-UNION OF THE SCAPHOID

Journal of Hand Surgery (European Volume), 2007
The MRI finding of bone marrow oedema, without fracture, following trauma to the scaphoid has been called a ‘bone bruise’. A similar injury is found in the knee, considered benign and managed conservatively. In the scaphoid, there is the concern that this lesion may lead to scaphoid non-union. This study addresses that concern.

Direct coronal CT of the scaphoid bone.

Radiology, 1989
A simple technique is described for the acquisition of coronal computed tomographic images of the wrist without positioning or immobilizing devices. The technique was used in four cases in which the radiographs were equivocal, to assess healing after scaphoid bone fracture or grafting.

Aneurysmal Bone Cyst of the Scaphoid

JBJS Case Connector, 2016
Case: We report the case of a 14-year-old girl with an aneurysmal bone cyst of the scaphoid successfully treated with curettage, phenol adjuvant therapy, and bone-grafting. Conclusion: Aneurysmal bone cysts rarely arise in the carpal bones, especially the scaphoid.

Fractures of the carpal bones excluding the scaphoid

Journal of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, 2002
Abstract Carpal fractures excluding the scaphoid can cause morbidity that is disproportionate to their incidence because they are easily overlooked and are often harbingers of a wider wrist injury. Failure to recognize a more global injury pattern can result in undertreatment and permanent wrist dysfunction.

The Extraosseous and Intraosseous Blood Supply of the Scaphoid Bone

The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, 1966
The extraosseous and intraosseous blood supplies of the scaphoid were determined in eleven human specimens by gross dissection, examination under a dissecting microscope, clearing by the method of Spalteholz, and microangiography. The extraosseous arteries of the scaphoid originated from the radial ...

Recent Fractures of the Scaphoid Bone

2015
Fractures of the scaphoid are current, especially in young men, and represent 70–80 % of the traumas of the carpus. The large majority concerns the scaphoid waist, which is narrower and more fragile than the other parts of the bone.
