Nonunion of the Carpal Scaphoid
The Journal of Trauma: Injury, Infection, and Critical Care, 1982Symptomatic carpal scaphoid nonunion was treated by the volar bone graft technique described by Russe in 31 patients reviewed. The technique was successful in attaining union in 27 wrists; nonunion persisted in 4 wrists. The presence of n unstable nonunion did not seem to affect the end result if the small necrotic proximal pole fracture is excluded ...

Ilizarov treatment of scaphoid nonunion
Injury, 2013This is single centre retrospective review of a consecutive series of patients with scaphoid nonunion (SNU) treated using the Ilizarov technique without bone graft. Fifteen of the original 18 patients were available for clinical and radiological examination at a minimum follow-up of 5 years (range 5-10 years).

Limited arthrodesis for scaphoid nonunion
The Journal of Hand Surgery, 1994A new surgical technique is described for the treatment of longstanding scaphoid nonunions with established degenerative changes and carpal malalignment. The technique is based on natural history and biomechanical studies and includes the excision of the distal scaphoid fragment and a limited arthrodesis that incorporates the proximal pole of the ...

NONUNION OF THE SCAPHOID DISTAL POLE
Hand Surgery, 2013This study was undertaken to determine the incidence of and assess factors affecting nonunion of scaphoid distal pole fractures. A total of 193 established scaphoid nonunions were treated in our clinics between the years 1999 and 2004; of which, eight cases involved the distal pole of the scaphoid.

We studied retrospectively the radiographs of 33 patients with late symptoms after scaphoid nonunion in an attempt to relate the incidence of scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse (SNAC) to the level of the original fracture. We found differing patterns for nonunion at the proximal, middle and distal thirds.

Titanium scaphoid implant for scaphoid nonunion
Operative Techniques in Orthopaedics, 1992A titanium scaphoid implant was developed in 1985 as an alternative to the silicone model. Surgical indications included aseptic necrosis with arthritic changes of the scaphoid, failures from previous surgery including bone grafting for fracture nonunion, and arthritic involvement of the scaphoid with associated carpal instability, particularly the ...

Scaphoid nonunions are challenging injuries to manage and the optimal treatment algorithm continues to be debated. Most scaphoid fractures heal when appropriately treated; however, when nonunions occur, they require acute treatment to prevent future complications like scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse.

Bone Grafts for Scaphoid Nonunion: An Overview
Hand Surgery, 2015The scaphoid is the most common fractured bone in the wrist. Despite adequate non-surgical treatment, around 10% to 15% of these fractures will not heal. Untreated scaphoid non-union can cause a scaphoid non-union advance collapse (SNAC), this is a progressive deformity and can cause degenerative changes in the wrist.

Nonunion of a fractured scaphoid tubercle
The Journal of Hand Surgery, 1990A case of nonunion of an avulsed scaphoid tubercle fragment is reported. The fragment became surrounded with a rim of calcification and ossification. After 3 1/2 years follow-up the fragment had migrated to the carpal tunnel simulating the appearance of an accessory ossicle.
