Summary:. Scaphoid nonunion occurs in 10%–15% of scaphoid fractures, potentially resulting in scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse. Distal scaphoid excision without allograft interposition is a known treatment, but can result in loss of carpal height and ...

Associations Between Area Deprivation Index and the Time to Presentation of Scaphoid Fractures
Purpose: Scaphoid fractures are the most common carpal fractures and are prone to nonunion because of their retrograde blood supply. Delayed diagnosis or treatment increases the risk of nonunion and progression to scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse ...

Treatment of Scaphoid Fractures and Nonunions [PDF]
Scaphoid fractures are common but present unique challenges because of the particular geometry of the fractures and the tenuous vascular pattern of the scaphoid. Delays in diagnosis and inadequate treatment for acute scaphoid fractures can lead to nonunions and subsequent degenerative wrist arthritis.

Dorsal approach to scaphoid nonunion
The surgical approach for treatment of scaphoid nonunion usually involves various combinations of screws and Kirschner wires, with or without bone grafts. This article reports our results with 36 dorsal-approach bone grafting procedures for treatment of scaphoid nonunion with Kirschner wires. Union was achieved in 89%. The average follow-up was 5 years.
