Metagenomics reveals that dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeinae) broadly feed on reptile dung. Did they also feed on that of dinosaurs?

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2023
The origin of the dung-feeding habits in dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeinae) is debatable. According to traditional views, the evolution of dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeinae) and their feeding habits are largely attributed to mammal dung.

Sex Ratio Modulates Reproductive Output and Dung Burying Behavior in Dung Beetle Gymnopleurus sturmi (Macleay, 1821) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
This study examines the sex‐specific roles and the impact of sex ratios on dung ball production and offspring emergence in the dung beetle species Gymnopleurus sturmi. It finds that both males and females can produce dung balls, with females producing the most when alone, while male presence increases offspring emergence rates.

Optimising Bait for Pitfall Trapping of Amazonian Dung Beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeinae)

open access: goldPLoS ONE, 2013
The accurate sampling of communities is vital to any investigation of ecological processes and biodiversity. Dung beetles have emerged as a widely used focal taxon in environmental studies and can be sampled quickly and inexpensively using baited pitfalls. Although there is now a wealth of available data on dung beetle communities from around the world,

Diversity of the Endemic Madagascan Dung Beetles (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Scarabaeinae): New Records from Six Protected Areas

open access: yesDiversity, 2023
Dung beetles (Scarabaeidae, Scarabaeinae) are among the most cost-effective and informative biodiversity indicator groups, conveying rich information about the status of habitats and faunas of an area. In Madagascar, they are important elements in forest

Diversity and distribution patterns of Ecuador’s dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeinae)

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2022
IntroductionEcuador harbors an astounding number of ecosystems and species. However, anthropogenic land-use changes are the primary drivers of biodiversity loss in major taxonomic groups, especially insects. Among them, the Scarabaeinae subfamily containing dung beetles, is an excellent taxon for studying taxonomic and functional diversity, as they are

A summary of the endemic beetle genera of the West Indies (Insecta: Coleoptera); bioindicators of the evolutionary richness of this Neotropical archipelago [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The Caribbean Islands (or the West Indies) are recognized as one of the leading global biodiversity hot spots. This is based on data on species, genus, and family diversity for vascular plants and non-marine vertebrates.
