One dung to attract them all: Faeces attractiveness to dung beetles in herbivore multispecies pasture

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 50, Issue 6, Page 1172-1183, December 2025.
Dung beetle attractiveness varies among dung from different herbivores despite similar diets. The diversity of herbivores within an enclosure has a limited effect on dung beetle's diversity. Trophic resource availability could impact dung beetle trophic preferences in the long term.

A new genus for the Neotropical species of Aesalus Fabricius, with descriptions of eight new species (Coleoptera: Lucanidae: Aesalinae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The Neotropical members of the genus Aesalus Fabricius (Coleoptera: Lucanidae: Aesalinae) are transferred to a new genus, Trogellus, due to their morphological dissimilarity and molecular divergence from the Old World species of Aesalus, and the new ...

Microallopatric Speciation in Southern African Dung Beetle Genus Macroderes Driven by Miocene Aridification and Ancestral Flight Loss

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 52, Issue 12, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Southern Africa harbours a diverse array of dung beetles (Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae), with many species endemic to the region. Despite this diversity, the historical drivers of their evolution remain largely unexplored. This study investigates the evolutionary history of the flightless dung beetle genus Macroderes, testing its monophyly ...

Ecologo-faunistic review of lamellicorn beetles (Coleoptera, Scarabaeoidea) of urbocenosis of Kharkov city (Ukraine)

open access: yesBiosystems Diversity, 2017
This article presents a general overview of the superfamily Scarabaeoidea in five parks of Kharkov city and some adjacent agrocenosises. The species composition includes 32 species from four families of Scarabaeoidea. The Scarabaeidae family dominated in

Multifaceted Biodiversity Patterns and Influencing Factors of Lucanus Stag Beetles (Coleoptera, Lucanidae) in China [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
As keystone indicators of forest integrity, stag beetles (genus Lucanus) in China reveal novel multidimensional patterns integrating taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional diversity. Our integrative framework elucidates the interactive effects of contemporary environmental gradients and historical climatic oscillations on these biodiversity dimensions,

Nomenclatural changes in the Nearctic Ochodaeinae and description of two new genera (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea: Ochodaeidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Generic placement of Nearctic species of Ochodaeinae has lagged behind changes in generic concepts in the group. In order to place Nearctic species into the appropriate genus-level taxa, several nomenclatural changes are made.

Shedding Light on Shining Leaf Chafers: Rutelinae MacLeay, 1819 (Coleoptera, Scarabaeoidea, Scarabaeidae) as a Neglected Group of Pollinators

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, Volume 149, Issue 10, Page 1584-1599, December 2025.
ABSTRACT The interactions between insects and angiosperms date back to millions of years ago. Among the groups of pollinating animals, it is estimated that insects are responsible for pollinating more than 70% of angiosperms. Coleoptera is one of the most studied insect groups for pollination.

Unveiling Dispersal Strength on a Metacommunity of Dung Beetles in a Heterogeneous Landscape

open access: yesAustral Ecology, Volume 50, Issue 11, November 2025.
Our study examines the dispersal dynamics of dung beetles across heterogeneous landscapes, shedding light on their habitat preferences and community structure. We identified patterns of dispersal and habitat association across forest, woodland and grassland habitats.
