The distribution of circularly polarized light reflection in the Scarabaeoidea (Coleoptera) [PDF]

open access: yesBiological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010
The light reflected from many scarab beetles is strongly circularly polarized, a phenomenon that may be unique in nature. Approximately 1500 genera and more than 19 000 species/subspecies of scarab beetles (Scarabaeoidea) in the collection of the Natural History Museum, London, were surveyed with circularly polarizing filters to assess how widespread ...

How Do Morphological Traits and Abundance Reflect the Effects of Land Use Change in a Seasonal Floodable Savannah? A Dung Beetle Case in the Brazilian Pantanal

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
We investigated the effects of land‐use change on the abundance and morphological traits (body mass, pronotum ratios, protibial size, elytra ratio, and pronotum–abdomen proportion) of two dung beetle species (Dichotomius bos and D. nisus) in the Brazilian Pantanal.

One dung to attract them all: Faeces attractiveness to dung beetles in herbivore multispecies pasture

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Dung beetle attractiveness varies among dung from different herbivores despite similar diets. The diversity of herbivores within an enclosure has a limited effect on dung beetle's diversity. Trophic resource availability could impact dung beetle trophic preferences in the long term.
