Evisceration following Abdominal Scarification in Neonates [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Tropical Pediatrics, 2017
Invasive traditional practices which are frequently harmful are common in the care of children including neonates in developing countries. We report two cases of evisceration of intra-abdominal viscera in two neonates subjected to abdominal scarification with razor blades following febrile illnesses.

Effect of seed coat on the seed germination and seedling development of Calophyllum brasiliense Cambess. (Clusiaceae)

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Biological Sciences, 2014
This work aimed to study the effect of the Calophyllum brasiliense seed coat on the seed germination process. To this end, three experiments were conducted in laboratory, greenhouse and screenhouse. From a total of six treatments, five are related to the

Evaluating approaches to measuring ocular pain in bovine calves with corneal scarification and infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis–associated corneal ulcerations1

open access: greenJournal of Animal Science, 2014
Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is a common ocular disease in cattle, associated with a 6.8 to 13.6 kg decrease in weaning weight. Antibiotic therapy is available but it is unclear if pain mitigation as an adjunct therapy would reduce the ...

Dormancy Breaking of Teramnus labialis (L.f.) Spreng Seeds Is Affected by the Extent of Liquid Nitrogen Exposure

open access: yesSeeds, 2023
Teramnus labialis (L.f.) Spreng shows dormancy as a result of impermeability of the seed coat, which requires scarification treatment before sowing. Liquid nitrogen (LN) as a scarifying treatment has recently been used on this species, with excellent ...

Determinants of Bacille Calmette-Guérin scarification in Danish children [PDF]

open access: yesHeliyon, 2021
Studies in low-income countries have shown that among Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccinated children, those who develop a BCG-scar have significantly better survival than those who do not develop a scar. In a Danish multicenter randomized clinical trial we assessed determinants for developing a BCG-scar and for BCG scar size following neonatal BCG ...

Seed Maturity and Its In Vitro Initiation of Chilean Endemic Geophyte Alstroemeriapelegrina L.

open access: yesHorticulturae, 2022
Alstroemeria pelegrina (A. pelegrina), a Chilean endemic, is considered vulnerable as its natural habitat is currently threatened. The decline in the reproductive capacity of the species due to anthropogenic impacts and climate change has made it ...

Effects of pre-harvest fertilization and subsequent soil scarification on the growth of planted Pinus sylvestris seedlings and ground vegetation after clear-felling

open access: yesSilva Fennica, 2013
Fertilization and scarification are both performed to increase tree production at different stages of forest rotation periods. In this study, the effects of previous nitrogen fertilizations and scarification after clear felling on planted L.

Topsoil removal through scarification improves natural regeneration in high‐graded Nothofagus old‐growth forests

open access: yes, 2018
1.High grading by removing the majority of trees with superior timber quality has led to loss of productivity and biodiversity in forests. Typically, after high grading, little attention is given to tree regeneration.

Determinants of BCG scarification among children in rural Guinea-Bissau: A prospective cohort study

open access: yesHuman Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics, 2018
Background: Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination may have beneficial non-specific effects on child survival, the effects being stronger for children developing a scar. In a prospective cohort study, we examined determinants for not developing a BCG
