Medicane characteristics from high‐resolution satellite radar observations

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study uses high‐resolution observations from satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to reveal that medicanes, cyclones with tropical features in the Mediterranean basin, have dynamical characteristics with attributes comparable with those of tropical cyclones of similar intensities, but smaller outer sizes and Rossby numbers.

All‐sky assimilation impacts of the Tomorrow.io microwave sounder constellation on global weather forecasts

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Key Findings: An assimilation methodology is established for the Tomorrow.io microwave sounder (TMS) flying on CubeSats in sun‐synchronous and inclined orbits, and in all cloud scenes. The TMS has a significant impact on weather forecast lead times up to 3 days in the Tropics in a research‐quality numerical weather prediction setting, and yields water ...

Assessing high‐resolution numerical models and bottom‐boundary factors for a Mediterranean heavy precipitation event

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
State‐of‐the‐art, convection‐permitting NWP models reproduced the main features of the October 22–23, 2019 heavy precipitation event in Catalonia. However, slight configuration changes yielded varying streamflow responses and statistical performance, highlighting the challenge of simulating these events in Mediterranean medium‐sized basins ...

Liquid‐Processed 2D Aromatic Amorphous Carbon: Defect Engineering and Universal Transport Scaling

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Liquid‐processed graphene oxide (GO) thin films undergo a controllable crystalline–to–amorphous transition driven by thermal quenching. By kinetically tuning oxygen‐driven defect formation during reduction, scalable 2D aromatic amorphous carbon phases are stabilized, directly linking nanoscale disorder and defect topology to electronic transport ...

Additive‐Free Edge‐Functionalized Graphene Dough

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
An edge‐functionalized, few‐layer graphene dough, synthesised directly from graphite, provides an additive‐free, processable graphene for moldable and printed electronic and magnetic applications. ABSTRACT The exploitation of graphene's extraordinary properties depends on finding new ways to synthesize and process it without disrupting its fundamental ...
