Effective waves for random three-dimensional particulate materials

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2021
How do you take a reliable measurement of a material whose microstructure is random? When using wave scattering, the answer is often to take an ensemble average (average over time or space).

Purcell factor enhanced scattering efficiency in optical microcavities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Scattering processes in an optical microcavity are investigated for the case of silicon nanocrystals embedded in an ultra-high Q toroid microcavity. Using a novel measurement technique based on the observable mode-splitting, we demonstrate that light ...

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

Are Eberlein–Grothendieck scattered spaces $$\sigma $$ σ -discrete? [PDF]

open access: yesRevista de la Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Fisicas y Naturales. Serie A. Matematicas, 2013
A space $X$ is Eberlein-Grothendieck if $X\subset C_p(K)$ for some compact space $K.$ In this paper we address the problem of whether such a space $X$ is $\sigma$-discrete whenever it is scattered. We show that if $w(K)\leq\omega_1$ then $X$ is $\sigma$-dicrete whenever $X$ has height $\omega_1$ and it is locally compact or locally countable.

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

An Indigenous Public Sphere? The Media and the 2009 Sámediggi Election Campaign

open access: yesArctic Review on Law and Politics, 2013
This article discusses media coverage of the Norwegian Sámediggi election campaign in 2009, focusing on the research question: Did Sami voters, scattered over a vast geographical area and split into multiple language groups, have a public space in the ...
