Abstract Water status, water dynamics, and ecohydrological resilience of a protected German beech forest during the 2018–2020 multi‐year drought are assessed using over six years of multi‐frequency remote sensing data, integrating active, passive, and optical sensors with varying canopy penetration depths, highlighting the importance of monitoring ...

Medicane characteristics from high‐resolution satellite radar observations
This study uses high‐resolution observations from satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to reveal that medicanes, cyclones with tropical features in the Mediterranean basin, have dynamical characteristics with attributes comparable with those of tropical cyclones of similar intensities, but smaller outer sizes and Rossby numbers.

Long Term Assimilation of Directional Wave Data From CFOSAT in the Wave Prediction Model MFWAM
Abstract Recently, satellite wave observations have stepped forward with the innovative measurements from the wave scatterometer SWIM of the CFOSAT mission which provides both the significant wave height (SWH) along‐track at nadir look and the directional wave spectra on off‐nadir incidence angle.

Abstract This study presents a new physical‐biogeochemical simulation of the Pacific Ocean that resolves mesoscale dynamics and explicitly includes tidal forcing. The primary objective is to develop and document a modeling framework that serves both as a detailed record of model configuration and forcing preparation, and as a reference for future ...

Pseudo‐diffusivity characteristic curves for surface–rootzone soil hydrologic connectivity
Abstract Accurate quantification of the rootzone soil moisture (θ) dynamics and hydrologic thresholds is important to advance sustainable agricultural water management and drought monitoring. Various low‐pass filters are popularly used to generate a first‐order approximation of θ, referred to here as θ̂$\hat{\theta }$, from temporally smoothed and ...

Frozen Soil Hydrological Processes and Their Effects: A Review and Synthesis
Abstract Frozen soils, including seasonally frozen ground and permafrost, are rapidly changing under a warming climate, with cascading effects on water, energy, and carbon cycles. We synthesize recent advances in the physics, observation, and modeling of frozen‐soil hydrology, emphasizing freeze–thaw dynamics, infiltration regimes and preferential flow,

Peering Inside Tropical Cyclones With the WIVERN Space‐Borne Doppler Radar
Abstract The WIVERN (Wind Velocity Radar Nephoscope) mission significantly enhances the global tropical cyclone observing system. Operating from a 500 km near‐polar orbit, the 3 m diameter conically scanning antenna provides an 800 km swath. The radar operated at 94 GHz (3 mm wavelength) provides high‐resolution observations with a vertical resolution ...

Abstract Understanding historical and future surface soil moisture (SSM) drying is pivotal due to its close links with droughts, heatwaves, and wildfires, yet debates regarding its evolution persist. In this study, we leverage advanced deep learning techniques to fill gaps of remote sensing‐based SSM data during 1983–2020 and therefore use these gap ...

Abstract Near‐inertial waves (NIWs) are an important source of turbulence for the ocean interior. Mesoscale anticyclonic eddies are known to facilitate their propagation at depth while trapping them. However, in situ observations have so far focused on large (>50 ${ >} 50$ km radius), energetic eddies, whereas most of the ocean is populated by smaller,

Phase‐Resolved Attribution of Tropical Cyclone Cold Wakes From an Interpretable Data‐Driven Model
Abstract Tropical cyclones (TCs) generate pronounced sea surface cooling through multiscale air‐sea interactions, yet predicting its full evolution and identifying the governing mechanisms remain challenging. Here we develop TC‐Net, an interpretable deep learning framework that integrates a 3D convolutional encoder with a Transformer bottleneck to ...
