Courtship inhibition pheromone in desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria

Male desert locusts in the gregarious phase release phenylacetonitrile (PAN) on becoming sexually mature. It has been assumed that this chemical is responsible for aggregation of adult desert locusts. However, PAN has repellent characteristics and is involved in sexual behavior.

ABSTRACT The anatomy of the metathoracic leg is redescribed with particular reference to storage of energy in cuticular elements and the way in which the stored energy is used in jumping. The jump of adult male locusts requires an energy of 9 mJ and that of the female requires 11 mJ.

Components (1), (3), and (4) can readily be isolated in the locust ocellus but component (2) as recorded in the locust ocellus is probably an artefact.

Allatostatin-like immunoreactivity in the abdomen of the locust Schistocerca gregaria

A polyclonal antibody against allatostatin 1 (AST-1) of cockroach Diploptera punctata was used to investigate the distribution of AST-like immunoreactivity within the abdomen of the locust, Schistocerca gregaria. In the abdominal ganglia, AST-like immunoreactivity was found in both cell bodies and neuropile.

Abstract The sclerotization of both larval and adult cuticle from the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria , has been studied by measuring the incorporation of radioactive dopamine and N-acetyldopamine into the cuticle.
