Splenomegaly in Schistosomiasis Mansoni
The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1962Summary Egg counts for Schistosoma mansoni in part of the population of a highly endemic town in Pernambuco, Brazil, showed that after reaching a maximum early in life, egg output decreased sharply. It is felt that acquired immunity may be involved. While splenomegaly in other parasitic or infectious diseases may start in infancy, spleen enlargement in

Haematuria in experimental schistosomiasis mansoni
Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1983Haematuria was found in 27% of mice experimentally infected with Schistosoma mansoni. The presence of red blood cells in the urine was detected only after the sixth week of infection. Haematuria was not due to the direct action of the parasite, since no eggs were found in the urinary system.

The Journal of Laryngology & Otology, 1989
Schistosoma mansoni is common in Nigeria as well as in other countries of West Africa (Edington, 1979). The eggs are laid in the small venules of the submucosal layer of the intestinal wall and pass out usually in the faeces but some may enter the blood stream to be found in any organ of the body (Edington et al., 1975).

MRI of Hepatic Schistosomiasis Mansoni
Journal of Computer Assisted Tomography, 1995Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed in a patient with hepatic schistosomiasis mansoni. On T1-weighted images periportal zones appeared isointense to the surrounding liver, but strongly enhanced after injection of Gd-DTPA. This finding equals periportal enhancement in postcontrast CT studies and does not discriminate between periportal ...

RENAL TRANSPLANTATION AND SCHISTOSOMIASIS MANSONI
Transplantation, 1987Eleven patients with schistosomiasis mansoni received a renal transplant. In 5 patients, the schistosomiasis was asymptomatic and had been diagnosed by routine examinations and had no relationship to nephropathy. In 4 patients, the nephropathy was suggestive of being of schistosomal origin.

Immunoglobulins in Human Schistosomiasis Mansoni
The Journal of Parasitology, 1971Immunoglobulin levels were determined by the reverse immunodiffusion technique in 3 groups of subjects: (A) 20 patients at the early stage of schistosomiasis mansoni infection; (B) 20 patients at the chronic stage of schistosomiasis; (C) 20 healthy controls. Group A showed significant increase of serum IgG (2,731 ? 608 mg/100 ml) and IgM (144 ?

Chemotherapy of Schistosomiasis mansoni
1977Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the chemotherapy of Schistosomiasis mansoni ( S. mansoni ). S. mansoni in vitro cultures are very useful for investigating the mechanism of action of active compounds and afterward, for selecting the best compounds of a series through in vivo/in vitro tests.
