Visualizing sound waves with schlieren optics
American Journal of Physics, 201810.1119/1.5042245.1 Using schlieren optics as a tool to see the invisible, we describe a technique of visualizing traveling ultrasonic (28 kHz) sound waves in real time. Suitable for lecture demonstration purposes or as an instructional laboratory experiment, our setup can readily demonstrate the reflection of sound waves from surfaces, diffraction ...

Design of a Schlieren System for Visualization of Heat and Mass Transfer
2020 2nd Novel Intelligent and Leading Emerging Sciences Conference (NILES), 2020In this contribution, a simple yet effective design for Schlieren photography system is described and implemented. The proposed system is used in the visualization of both heat and mass transfer phenomena. Refractive index gradient is created by a lighter to study mass transfer, then the lighter is ignited to create temperature gradient.

Bullseye color schlieren flow visualization
Experiments in Fluids, 1988In this variant of schlieren flow visualization a tricolored filter pattern made up of concentric rings is used instead of a knife edge at the cut-off plane. The method is particularly useful in combustion studies since it provides the range necessary to visualize flames while retaining the sensitivity necessary to detect fluid motion in the ...

Quantitative schlieren visualization
Applied Optics, 1977Using a closed circuit television camera (CCTV), a method was developed to directly obtain quantitative sound pressure measurements from the sound fields imaged in a Schlieren system. By using the exact timed format of the composite video signal and a series of time delay circuits, it was possible to take vertical intensity scans of a Schlieren image ...

Schlieren Visualization of Acoustic Fields
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1974The schlieren method has been used for visualization of the interaction of acoustic fields and solid surfaces. The reradiated waves caused by an incident pulse are observed at different positions by strobe schlieren systems. Individual cycles can be displayed in an acoustic wave, and thus phase information is available in a visualizationsystem that ...

Visualization of Ultrasonic Waves by Schlieren Method
Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 1982Principle and application of the schlieren method for the visualization of ultrasonic waves are described. Some schlieren photographs of continuous and pulsed ultrasonic waves are shown, and short interpretations of ultrasonic images are also given.

A modified schlieren technique for micro flow visualization
Measurement Science and Technology, 2007A modified schlieren technique has been developed for studies of supersonic flow through a micronozzle setup. After taking the ratio between reference and schlieren images, the noise has been reduced and the contrast in the image has been improved. The shock wave pattern in the micronozzle has been clearly identified at the total pressure of 41.4 kPa.

Investigation of Tandem Injection in Supersonic Flow using Schlieren Visualization
AIAA Scitech 2020 Forum, 2020A Schlieren flow visualization system has been developed for the study of the injection of jets in a supersonic cross-flow, such as used in supersonic-combustion ramjets. Both single-jet in-jec¬tion and cascaded, dual, tandem, injection have been considered in a M∞ supersonic cross-flow in a continuous supersonic wind tunnel.

Quantitative schlieren visualization of unipolar acoustic transients
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1978Image intensity distributions have been calculated for the schlieren observation of Gaussian, unipolar acoustic pulses. The optical intensity distributions in both the Fourier transform plane (stop plane) and the image plane are discussed. Experimental observations are presented for Gaussian-like pressure transients generated by narrow voltage pulse ...

A Schlieren system for optical visualization of ultrasonic fields.
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2009Ultrasonic field mapping is an essential component of transducer characterization and of beam forming verification. Such measurements are commonly performed by displacing a hydrophone over a range of points within the field; these procedures can be time-consuming.
