The Schmidt hammer in rock material characterization

Engineering Geology, 2005
The Schmidt hammer provides a quick and inexpensive measure of surface hardness that is widely used for estimating the mechanical properties of rock material. However, a number of issues such as hammer type, normalization of rebound values, specimen dimensions, surface smoothness, weathering and moisture content, and testing, data reduction and ...

The schmidt hammer, weathering and rock surface roughness

Earth Surface Processes and Landforms, 1991
AbstractMeasures of the differential relief of adjacent feldspar and pyroxene grains provide the first clear negative correlation of Schmidt hammer rebound (R‐) values and degree of weathering. However, weathering and roughness are intimately related, so the latter cannot be seen simply as a source of error limiting the utility of the Schmidt hammer ...

A minimum sample size required from Schmidt hammer measurements

Earth Surface Processes and Landforms, 2009
AbstractThe Schmidt hammer is a useful tool applied by geomorphologists to measure rock strength in field conditions. The essence of field application is to obtain a sufficiently large dataset of individual rebound values, which yields a meaningful numerical value of mean strength.

Developed Schmidt hammer based on jerk measurement

Nondestructive Characterization and Monitoring of Advanced Materials, Aerospace, Civil Infrastructure, and Transportation XV, 2021
The evaluation of hardened concrete quality became significantly important as a result of the continuous and increasing demand on concrete. Mechanical rebound hammer is a quick non-destructive evaluation method used to test the performance of hardened concrete onsite to assure the quality of newly casted concrete or asses the performance of old ...

Making the Schmidt Hammer Great Again!

2022
<p>Have you ever applied the Schmidt hammer method and wondered what the R‑value represents? What SI unit it would have and which material properties it actually assesses? The Schmidt rebound hammer is a device initially intended to test the curing state and strength of concrete.

Clast transport history influences Schmidt hammer rebound values

Earth Surface Processes and Landforms, 2020
AbstractThe Schmidt hammer (SH) is widely used in geomorphology for relative‐ and calibrated‐exposure age dating surfaces and deposits within landforms. This study employs a laboratory‐based methodology to assess the effects of surface roughness, clast roundness, and clast volume on SH rebound values (R‐values) by analyzing samples from three modern ...

Rock abrasivity test with a modified schmidt hammer

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1982
Ideally, an abrasivity test should be physically similar to the real cutting process of a drag bit or roller cutter and should generate a force of a few tonnes. The note describes how an m-type Schmidt hammer was modified and used as a portable in-situ tester.

Evaluation of Schmidt Hammer Rebound Hardness Test Holders

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1984
Abstract An evaluation is made of three different holders for Schmidt hammer tests on rock core in the laboratory, including steel angle, V-notch, and semicircular groove holders. The differences are small, but it is shown that the V-notch holder gives consistently higher rebound hardness values.

Hardness Testing of Polymer Concrete Castings by Schmidt Hammer

Materials Today: Proceedings, 2020
Abstract Presented paper is focused on testing the hardness of polymer concrete castings by Schmidt hammer. The first part of the paper describes the theoretical knowledge from the material area of the issue. The experimental part of the paper is devoted to the production process of the polymer concrete castings and to the materials, machines and ...
