Dyeing wastewater containing methyl orange (MO) could be effectively discolored by schorl-catalyzed Fenton-like system. Experimental results indicated that the MO discoloration ratios could be increased by increasing schorl dosage, temperature, initial H2O2 concentration, and by decreasing solution pH.

The early history of the mineral schorl shows that this name was in use prior to the year 1400 AD because a village known today as Zschorlau (in Saxony, Germany) was then named ‘‘Schorl’’ (or minor variants of thisname). This village had a nearby tin mine where, in addition to cassiterite, a lot of black tourmaline was found (Ertl, 2006).

The crystal-chemistry of 13 elbaite-schorl tourmaline crystals from the Cruzeiro pegmatite (Minas Gerais, Brazil) was studied with a multi-analytical approach (SREF, EMPA, SIMS, MS). Effective cation radii at the Y and Z sites and site populations were reÞ ned by a minimization procedure.
