Numerical Schubert Calculus in Macaulay2

open access: yes, 2021
The Macaulay2 package NumericalSchubertCalculus provides methods for the numerical computation of Schubert problems on Grassmannians. It implements both the Pieri homotopy algorithm and the Littlewood-Richardson homotopy algorithm. Each algorithm has two independent implementations in this package.

Impact of small‐scale gravity waves on tracer transport

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We extend a gravity wave (GW) parametrization to calculate the tracer transport due to the GW–Stokes drift and next‐order effects, where the approach is validated by comparing coarse‐resolution simulations with parametrized GWs to high‐resolution, wave‐resolving reference simulations.

The special Schubert calculus is real

open access: yes, 1998
We show that the Schubert calculus of enumerative geometry is real, for special Schubert conditions. That is, for any such enumerative problem, there exist real conditions for which all the a priori complex solutions are real.Comment: 5 ...

Degree bounds in quantum Schubert calculus [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the American Mathematical Society, 2003
Fulton and Woodward have recently identified the smallest degree of $q$ that appears in the expansion of the product of two Schubert classes in the (small) quantum cohomology ring of a Grassmannian. We present a combinatorial proof of this result, and provide an alternative characterization of this smallest degree in terms of the rim hook formula for ...

A pilot variational coupled reanalysis based on the CESAM climate model

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Variational data assimilation of in‐situ and satellite ocean data and reanalysis atmospheric data into an intermediate complexity Earth system model is possible by adjusting the surface fluxes and internal model parameters. This pilot application requires nearly complete information on the atmospheric state for synchronization.

Schubert calculus and puzzles

open access: yesAdvanced Studies in Pure Mathematics, 2018
These are notes for four lectures given at the Osaka summer school on Schubert calculus in 2012, presenting the geometry from the unpublished arXiv:1008.4302 giving an extension of the puzzle rule for Schubert calculus to equivariant $K$-theory, while eliding some of the combinatorial detail.

Moisture and wind effects of Rossby waves on Western Pacific Intertropical Convergence Zone breakdown events

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
(a) Organized convection: clouds are clustered at the southern edge of the domain, aligning with the warmest SST. Northeasterly winds prevail, facilitating convection confinement to the southern part of the domain. (b) ITCZ breakdown: the clouds are spread throughout the domain.

Mapping River Bed Topography in Whitewater Rapids Using Bathymetric LiDAR

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Bathymetric LiDAR captures river topography efficiently for clear and shallow water, but for mountain rivers, whitewater rapids still pose challenges. This study proposes a novel method to enable the extraction of bottom returns specifically in turbulent whitewater sections.

Schubert puzzles and integrability I: invariant trilinear forms

open access: yes, 2020
The puzzle rules for computing Schubert calculus on $d$-step flag manifolds, proven in [Knutson Tao 2003] for $1$-step, in [Buch Kresch Purbhoo Tamvakis 2016] for $2$-step, and conjectured in [Coskun Vakil 2009] for $3$-step, lead to vector ...
