Reflecting Spheres in the Eyes of Weakfishes (Sciaenidae)

Nature, 1971
A REFLECTING layer or tapetum lucidum occurs in the eyes of many fishes; in teleosts, it lies in the pigment epithelium1. The reflecting material is usually considered to be guanine, but in weakfishes or seatrouts (Sciaenidae) it is a lipid2,3. We have been able to characterize the lipid material.

Mitochondrial DNA Part A, 2015
The giant croaker Nibea japonica (Perciformes, Sciaenidae) is an important economic fish distributing in the East China Sea, South China Sea, and Japan southern coast. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of N. japonica was firstly determined. It is 16 496 bp-length and consists of 22 tRNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNA genes, and

Tapeta lucida in the eyes of the seatrout (Sciaenidae)

Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series B. Biological Sciences, 1972
Abstract Eyes of the seatrout (Sciaenidae) contain a tapetum lucidum, located in processes of the pigment epithelial cells. The tapetum is a white diffuse reflector, occluded by black retinal pigment by day, and exposed by retreat of pigment at night; threshold for pigment migration is around 10 lx.
