Ultrasound Imaging of the Sciatic Nerve
Ultraschall in der Medizin - European Journal of Ultrasound, 2023AbstractThe sciatic nerve (SN) is the biggest nerve in the human body and innervates a large skin surface of the lower limb and several muscles of the thigh, leg, and foot. It originates from the ventral rami of spinal nerves L4 through S3 and contains fibers from both the posterior and anterior divisions of the lumbosacral plexus.

Schwannomatosis of the sciatic nerve
Skeletal Radiology, 2001A 52-year-old woman with schwannomatosis in the left sciatic nerve is presented. The patient had no stigmata of neurofibromatosis (NF) type 1 or 2. Cutaneous or spinal schwannomas were not detected. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the sciatic nerve revealed more than 15 tumors along the course of the nerve.

Schwannomas are benign tumors of the nerve sheath, commonly seen in the vestibular nerve. Although they are common in the head and neck areas, their occurrence in extra-cranial locations is rare. We report a case of a sciatic nerve schwannoma and review the literature.

The sciatic nerve is located deeply, is complex in its conformation, and is the largest single nerve of the body. Multiple and varied approaches are described for its blockade. It is preferably performed with a peripheral nerve stimulator seeking an adequate muscular response.
