Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Scientific Research and Growth Volatility [PDF]

open access: yes
This article uncovers a strong link between scientific and engineering publications on the one hand, and growth volatility on the other: growth volatility is significantly lowered by a country’s ability to publish more scientific and engineering journal ...

Scientific realism and the history of science [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The paper considers the two main challenges to scientific realism, stemming from confirmation holism and the underdetermination thesis as well as from semantic holism and the incommensurability thesis. Against the first challenge, it is argued that there

An unexpected alternative viologen electron mediator site in tungsten‐containing formate dehydrogenase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...

Potential public health and economic impact of maternal vaccination with bivalent respiratory syncytial virus prefusion F (RSVpreF) vaccine for the prevention of acute respiratory infection among infants in the United States

open access: yesExpert Review of Vaccines
Background The U.S. Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends use of bivalent stabilized prefusion F subunit vaccine (RSVpreF) among pregnant persons to protect their infants against lower respiratory tract illness due to RSV (RSV-LRTI ...

Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This
