Indicators concerning to different fields can be compared only after first gauging them against a properly chosen reference standard, and their relative standing can then be compared.

Scientometrics, 2003Relative indicators are preferably used for comparative evaluation of thematically different sets of journal papers. The Relative Publication Strategy and Relative Subfield Citedness (RPS/RW) function referring to a set of papers selected was found to be identical with the Mean Expected Citation Rate and Mean Observed Citation Rate (MECR/MOCR) function.
