Both synergism and interaction diversity explain the mixtures of defensive monoterpenes in spruce oleoresin

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Chemical defences, such as the monoterpenes of conifer oleoresin, frequently occur as complex blends of many components, but the selective pressures that maintain these mixtures are not yet known.

Experimental Evidence Against Taurine Deficiency as a Driver of Aging in Humans

open access: yesAging Cell, EarlyView.
Circulating taurine concentration is not associated with age, muscle mass, strength, physical performance, or mitochondrial function in humans. Taurine deficiency is therefore unlikely to be a primary driver of aging in humans. ABSTRACT Taurine deficiency was recently proposed as a driver of aging in various species, including humans.

Imatinib decreases germ cell survival and germline stem cell proliferation in rodent testis ex vivo and in vitro

open access: yesAndrology, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Imatinib and dasatinib are tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) increasingly used to treat several diseases in both children and adults at fertile age. We have previously shown that imatinib has adverse effects on developing testis, and imatinib‐treated male patients have been reported to have reduced sperm counts.

PI5P4K inhibitors: promising opportunities and challenges

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Developing inhibitors is like climbing a steep, challenging mountain. PI5P4K inhibitors hold significant promise for the treatment of cancer, immune disorders, and neurological diseases. However, the path to success is fraught with hurdles, and researchers are therefore required to apply their expertise to overcome critical “checkpoints.” While some ...

Gαs‐specific structural elements attenuate interactions with regulator of G protein signaling (RGS) proteins

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Heterotrimeric (αβγ) G proteins are usually inactivated by regulators of G protein signaling (RGS) proteins, but Gαs is an exception. Comparative structural analysis identified unique Gαs structural elements that may interfere with RGS binding. Mutagenesis and biochemical assays showed that three residues in the Gαs GTPase domain are both necessary and
