ScleraSegNet: an Improved U-Net Model with Attention for Accurate Sclera Segmentation
International Conference on Biometrics, 2019Accurate sclera segmentation is critical for successful sclera recognition. However, studies on sclera segmentation algorithms are still limited in the literature.

Publisher Summary This chapter describes the sclera as a thin, spherically shaped connective tissue contiguous with the cornea at the limbus. The stromal lamellae from the cornea, on crossing through the limbus, increasingly interweave. Individual collagen fibrils of each lamella also change from their uniform 30 nm diameter and 60 nm center-to-center

Mechanical Behavior of the Sclera
Ophthalmologica, 1986Induced deformations, similar to the posterior pole deformations due to advanced myopia, were studied in a series of 30 rabbits. The induced deformations were produced by means of a specially designed cup. An analysis of the applicability of the shell theory is made, and it is concluded that the thin shell theory is applicable to the mechanical study ...

Microstructural Crimp of the Lamina Cribrosa and Peripapillary Sclera Collagen Fibers
Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, 2017Purpose Although collagen microstructural crimp is a major determinant of ocular biomechanics, no direct measurements of optic nerve head (ONH) crimp have been reported.

In this age of sub-specialization one does not normally hear about a scleral specialist! Covering about 80% of the globe surface, the sclera one would have thought would have caused more trouble than it is credited for. On the whole, the sclera appears like an inactive tissue with no major function except to protect the delicate internal layers. Sclera

Five patients from two families had similar features including keratoglobus, blue scleras, hyperextensibility of the hand, wrist, and ankle joints, sensorineural conduction hearing alterations, and mottling of the teeth. Keratoglobus had been observed in all patients at, or shortly after, birth.

A traumatic cyst of the sclera
International Ophthalmology, 1991The author describes a traumatic implantation cyst of the sclera which developed about two years after an injury with a knife, which caused a perforating scleral wound. The wound was sutured with the operating microscope. The possible mechanisms of the development of this cyst are discussed. Ophthalmologists should still bear in mind the possibility of

Solitary Myofibroma of the Sclera
Cornea, 2007To report a novel case of solitary myofibroma involving the sclera.Case report and review of the literature.A 19-year-old woman had an expanding and painful epibulbar mass clinically diagnosed as nodular scleritis that did not respond to anti-inflammatory therapy.

Publisher Summary The sclera is the toughest of the coats of the eye, as it is composed of dense fibrous tissue. It varies considerably in thickness, being thickest at the posterior pole and thinnest at the equator. The scleral coat possesses two foramina: anterior and posterior.
